Type 7A Scratch build
« on: April 29, 2010, 02:31:45 pm »

U-35 Type 7A  1:40 Scale   Model: 63.5" Scratch Built

The hull again is a one off, styrofoam, covered with 5 layers 4 oz fiberglass cloth & epoxy resin.
I split the boat at the waterline and took out all the junk... and wallah I had a good strong form
It then has taken quite a few months of filling and sanding to get it looking like this!

I spent a few months researching the boat, getting the plans etc.
The plans that I bought from Loyalhanna Dockyard were not accurate
so I used the side profile drawing of the boat from the David Westwood book The Type 7 U-boat
and the hull profiles from the Eberhard Rossler book The U-Boat.

Some of the other books that I have pictures from of the Type 7 boats:
German U-Boat Type7 by Heinz Nowarra
Kreigsmarine Type 7 U-boat   Warship Pictorial 27
Ubootewaffe  1939/45  Waldemar Trojca

Website: www.u-35.com ... lots of pictures.

I am planning to paint the boat as seen when it was part of a fleet during the Spanish Civil War.
The boat needs a few more bits and pieces added, before I start working on the
innards/electronics.

Will post pics of the inside of the boat... stay tuned!

yet another fine example of submarine technology.   let's see we've seen your type II, now a type VII, what's next?  a type IX?  :)   do you just plan on going up the type numbers... :)  will they all be 1:40?

Guys, thank you all for your positive comments...
A type 1X would be too big at 1:40 scale for me beside I like doing
boats that no one has done before.
Shall update the Type 7A boat with some more pics and information
Cheers,

Here is an update on the Type 7A  U-35
The boat is going to be powered with 2 2.5 Amp 12Volt Gel Cells just ahead of the ballast tank.
I will be able to operate the front dive planes via a servo housed in a lexan custom buit box with seal fixed in the front of the boat, the rear ones are wired up to the APC.
I still have to basically put the lid on the WTC, fit torpedo launch tube, already built...  antenna wires etc.
Hoping to have the boat ready for trimming in the next couple of weeks.
Cheers,
Desi
