As someone who learn to do technical rawing with pencil and paper I find CAD programs to be very frustrating to use as I cannot used them to do drawing in the way I learned to.

I have found a program called DrawPlus which combines the vector drawing of CAD type programs with the bitmap drawing used by photomanipulation software, which I find much easier to use. I'm using this to prepare the drawings for photo-etched parts at the moment. The latest version of this program(DrawPlus x4) is available from here -

I started off in the late 70's using pencil and paper when drawing.. and in some cases, that is still the best method!..

If i have to use CAD, its Autocad.. but you need VERY deep pockets to buy it!..

DON'T waste money on a formal CAD programme Hover Tim, you'll NEVER  use it to it's full extent, even if you're in the drawing "Trade". Have a google for free programmes and there are plenty about, I'm using one called "DoubleCad XT" which is a freebie from the successors of Turbo Cad. VERY much like AutoCad and yes A/C is a heavy programme to use.

A Lovely freebee which I've used for years is:-

CadStd - Cad Standard Lite freeware.

For boat hulls (although it takes a lot of practice), Delftship at

I personally use "MODO" http://www.luxology.com/modo/  Which isn't cheap.

As you've noticed everyone's got a different preference when it comes to CAD and it will always be that way, its just how you work and how your thought process works that helps you decide which is best.

A cheap and good one I like to use sometimes is AC3D, its more of a 3d modelling software but its well priced and produces decent wire-frame diagrams which can be easily made into a plan.

Good luck in your quest!
