Funny substance, why?
« on: January 06, 2007, 02:40:37 pm »

Hi all, I was wondering if someone could advise pls.
I recently added a failsafe to my sub and upon opening the WTC I noticed a funny smell and a greasy surface on most of the inside?
Is that because of the heat generated by the components?
As this is my first sub, am very curious to see if there is a cure apart from opening up the WTC frequently.
Many thanks
Peter

Hi Roy, before I put the Failsafe in it, easily about 2 months it was sealed.
I have used it most weekends during that period.
I can only think its to do with the heat generated by the motor and other elecronics generating heat.

:) hello Nomad, my WTC has been closed for yrs...When I have opened up the motor section there is a smell ..a sort of Smokey carbon smell i would describe and I think it is the motor.. from the carbon brushes I think , that is normal. But...I am not sure what the greasy stuff is , my WTC is bone dry with no contamination of any kind. One thought I have, could it be the grease in the prop shaft emulsifying ??? grease sometimes does that and goes into a milky substance when contaminated with water, and have you got a minor water leak ? As I said earlier my WTC has been sealed for yrs without any of your symptoms. A minor water leak will give you condensation on the inside, What system are you running. Air, water, piston tank ??? A picture would possibly help, Hope this is of some use to you.

Just remember ALWAYS surface the right way up !!! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks for that info, I think maybe your right, I def dont have a leak though, phew, but maybe when I opened it up outside the pool after a dive a small dribble may have got in.
Its got its own water pump and pressurised ballast tank which works lovely.
It doesnt seem to be doing any harm, as all is fully functional.
Dunno, back to the mill:) and thanks for your help

I have found with my WTC that after a days sailing when I get home I pop of the end cap and leave it open till the next sailing day, never seem to get any condensation or smells, when put the cap back on with a wipe of vaseline it seems to reseal perfectly, the only reason I do open the cap is to eliminate condensation completely.....

Thanks Roy, I am probably just being lazy in not opening the WTC on the occasions I should  :'(
I realise it does get hot in there and this could explain the smell and very light covering of a greasy substance on the inside from the motors(thanks Subdiver)
I shall invest in some vaseline for the seals and open her up when not in use.
Many thanks to you for your advice:)
