Arctic Camo scheme
« on: May 09, 2010, 09:15:44 pm »

I intend to paint my Destroyer model in an Arctic colour scheme.
Should I use brilliant white as an overall colour, or a slightly off-white?

Hi John,

If it is an RN ship, the white used (Western Approaches White) was an off-white (accurately matched in our Colourcoats enamels as item RN 10). If it is a USN ship, it was a pure white (Colourcoats item C 03).

Thanks John !
I've got your Western Approaches Blue And Green; was this colour scheme used on Arctic convoy Escort ships ?
I'm building a model of HMS Onslow.
If this scheme isn't accurate, I think I might apply it anyway (it just looks right !)
Any advice would be most appreciated though !

Hi John,

If you're referring to this camouflage scheme worn by Onslow:

It is the Special Emergency Fleet Destroyer Scheme, and though similar to the Western Approaches camo, used different colours:

Used by some fleet destroyers of the ”0” and ”P” classes from mid 1942, and then by other fleet destroyers as they entered service.
Colors used: G20, B30, G45, and white.
Decks: Steel areas are painted G20, Areas of wood, cemtex, corticene, and asphalt are left in their natural co1or.
Countershading: Paint the following white: Undersides of blast shields, flag decks, boats, Pom-Pom decks and other platforms.

I cannot find any pics of Onslow actually wearing Western Approaches camo, and doubt she did so.
