MFA Torpedo 800 Motors...
« on: January 06, 2007, 10:04:56 pm »

                    ...Hi Guys...

I have bought a part built twin screw "NANGEE"  tug which has 2 MFA Torpedo 800 motors installed in it.

Does anyone have any experience or thoughts on the suitability of these motors in a model tug to be used for tug towing competitions.

I have never used these motors before, So I am a wee bit wary of their suitability for the job...

                  ...Best Regards...Norry...

      Hi Norry.   Happy new year.
800's  heavy on the amps OK for a geard job
like the schottel drive unit, also to fast on direct drive.
try buhler motors good on the batts and the towing.

      Regards

            ...Hi John...

A Happy New Year to You and Yours Mate...

Thats what I was thinking about them  John.. They might be a bit fast for towing...

Do you know if there are reduction gearboxes available for these motors ?...

I might wait & see how "SCOTCH PRIDE" performs with 2 decaperms before I decide what I do with my other 2 decaperms...

              ...Best Regards...Norry...

Yes you can get belt drive g/boxes for these but expensive.
Hope she aint a steam tug, Deccaperms sound like gas turbines.
Model Slipway do some belt drive gearboxes and motors for about £20-30.

         Hi Norry.

MFA/como drills do a belt drive unit to fit the 800's and 850's.

Unit without motor  £39-95  inc vat. you can get different timing pulleys and belts.

Norry teh 800 only draw around 5amps it is the 850 that draw silly currents,as for towing and direct drive the 800 only rev up to around 5000rpm,if you decide to change pm me cheers Stav

As a rule of thumb Deccaperms run at about 2750 rpm

                               ...Hi Guiys...

Thanks for the information guys...I will give them a try & see how they perform under tug - towing conditions...

Gary.. I have never used these motors before, So I was just checking their suitability...
I was thinking that "Torpedo" meant that they were fast motors...Silly Me...

Norry
MMM think that everybody that buys one of there tugs is going to tow a full size rowboat with crew thats why they say use the oversized props & korts as well as the 2 power house's that came with your new computer parts.
cheers

That sounds promising.  Are you running them on 12v?  Thats a big ship, do they move her through the water well?
