Rip off
« on: May 17, 2010, 04:17:32 pm »

Last week my up & over garage door got stuck half way open, I called a local company called Easy-Lift Door sevices,
they came around the same day, in under an hour it was fixed.
        The charge ?               Labour   £96.00
                              Call Out Charge   £36.00
                                            Parts   £69.00
                                             VAT  £29.21
                                     Grand total £230.71
This was for a wire that had come off a pully.  I had a look on ebay - you can get an identical repair kit for £17.95.

My wife was a tad cross

Don't you think the crooks know that already? (Where do you think they got theirs from?)
Such a wretched state Great Britain has become.
And it's hardly any wonder your missus is cross. Bigger fool you for paying that much wedge in the first place.

My First instinct nowadays in most situations is Check E-Bay...

E-Bay is known in our house as "The Encyclopedia Of Life...

If you need any information about anything check there first...

PMK you are quite right, although it is salt into a wound, even worse I have had an underemployed painter/decorator do two days work for me at £200. Fourteen hours against one.
It would be nice if there was a place to warn local people against such sharks.

If this problem happens to others on this forum, I offer a few words of advice. Born from experience I may add.
With the tension on the wire it's impossible to get a jumped wire back on to its sheave/pulley. Clos the door by fair means or foul and at one end of the long spring there is a gizmo with a couple of hole in it and a locking bolt. Stuff a bar into whichever hole is handy and take the weight of the spring on it. Then loosen the locking bolt and carefully let the spring unwind using 2 bars (one in each hole).
Spring slackened and no wight on it, the wire can be easily replaced. As you've gone this far, you may as well have bought the repair kit. Winding the spring back up takes a bit of time (mine took 48 complete turns of the gizmo). An hours work and you've saved yourself allthe hassle of ringing around plus about £140. No contest. BY.

That's the problem really. When you know the solution it's relatively easy. It's when you don't that you can get conned. We all get caught on one thing or another just because we are operating in unfamilar territory so don't feel too bad about it Sinjon.

Something as simple as a door mechanism I would always do myself, but as Colin says, if you ain't familiar....
The wipers AND the hooters on my little car have decided not to work, all at the same time.
It's electrics  and worse...car electrics...aaarghhh!!!!!
But I ain't payin' no-one.
I have a loud voice and I've trained myself to see through a bumpy screen ok2

If the wipers and the horn have both stopped working check the fuses first? Your vehicle handbook will tell you where the fuse box is if you are not sure and the fuse box cover usually shows you which fuse operates which device.

Find a relieable back street mechanic. They usually rely on word of mouth. Ask the neighbours, especiall those with a 10+ year old motor, they are more likely to know a guy. I have often found that the little local backstreet guy relies on repeat custom. They also usually tell you if it is going to get costly and will ask before they proceed.

All very good advice, gents, thankyou.  The MOT is a year away fortunately.
It isn't fuses but it could be the connectors on the outside of the fusebox.
Also, as it's a fibreglass car it could easilly be a dodgy earth somewhere.
A weekend job for my son-in-law.
Why have a dog and bark oneself? ok2

Same make, different model, arrow5.
It's a Reliant Fox, with the van back end. We needed a simple, cheap to run thing we could put the doggies in.
Then, by chance I got back into model boats and it'll be very useful for those too! Especially the sailing ones.
55 miles to the gallon, classic insurance for £75.
Rising values.
Great fun and the Mrs. loves it.

Win, win all round, eh?

Just been quoted £250 odd for a Zorst for a 2006 Fiat Point, Main agent price. Not Bad?? Taking it in for inspection, only just done 15k miles and gets is third oilchange and second test at the end of this month. Only Guarantee Manufacturers new original for 12 months. No sign of rust on "Old" one.
