SDM tractor tug
« on: May 23, 2010, 01:19:39 am »

well i finally got the design right ,and built a tug for the shottel's .
This is built on a ply and polystyreen hull wrapped with pva and paper then covered with fiberglass,
build pictures  to follow , but on the water she is very manoverable, enjoy  :-)) .

that's a different name , maybe there could be a few more sugestions . but dont go by the wat it was been handled ,that was not me .
One thing i will say the motors (not sure what they are , but they are the size of a 540 but the power of a 800, johnsons type)they are thirsty ,
i managed to drain six 12v 2.9 ah's and two 12v4.9 ah's in a two hour session . But that could be the old batterys i am using , i will have to try a single 12v 7ah .
I have fitted a pc cooling fan to the deck under the wheel house to try and keep the electrickery cool but i will have to drill some more vents out on the deck and disguise them somehow,
i also have to hide some weights on the rear deck (stern) , maybe a locker there .
The one thing i have noticed with this one that unlike my other builds it don't leak  :-)) yet  %).

Well it isn't an SDM, but it is a tractor tug...  :}

It sounds great, and appears to handle really well.
With those large schottles, it should give you plenty of
bollard pull also.

Deck vents... here you go..  ;)

they look realy nice , and a couple of them near the winch should look ok ,
and with the lids up there should be ample air flow over the motors .
thank you for the ideas  :-)) .

Glad some of my ideas work out... LoL  %)

The hatch is just the air intake on my boat.
The fan and photo etched louvers were installed in the deck house at the other end of
the boat. It gave the ventilation a nice cross flow through the hull, and vented in a scale location.

 :-)

The duct up out of the hull...(the fan is in the superstructure)

And the etched brass vent in place.

Wasn't the plan to put one drive forward and one towards the stern, on either side?

What changed your mind?

I did try that at first , but on water trials it was almost un-steerable, i did have the scottels working independantly and the tug would move sideways realy well.
But as for forward and reverse with the scottels off set all it would do was spin on the spot.
So that hull is out side awaiting destruction ( unless someone wants a free hull).

That's odd, because mine runs really well in all directions.

It may be due to my design of the hull , i had no skegs under the hull only the two schottels .
With the new one it handles like a front wheel drive vehicleas the skeg at the rear keeps it all in line.

I think that probably answers the the question. There were a couple decisions made regarding
the skegs on the SDM tugs.. one of them was the holes in the base, to equalize the sidways maneuvering.

It should be mentioned, though,... that one of the names suggested for my SDM was "Twitchy".

Thank you Ian , still loads of work to do on it but i am too buisy playing with it .
Had it on the water over the weekend , it realy likes batterys . Went through 1 pair of 12v 4.5ah and 2 pair of 12v 2.9ah in about twenty mins ,
so in the end i tried a single 12v 7ah (limited for space) and ran her for over an hour .
So the other batterys which were second hand (ex alarm batterys) must be on their last leg's.
Next build will have a area for two 12v 7ah's (i have loads of them stacked in the shed) but with the hull the same size and maybe the drives over the center for sideways movement, but as for now i am happy .
