BOUND to be spam. No bank sends unsolicited email. And you'd go "fake" if something similar came from a bank you've no connection with.  :-))

The only email you will get from HSBC is their newsletter, it's not very interesting so probably best to ignore ANYTHING which purports to be from your bank. If they want to get in touch with you about account irregularities  they will ring you (in which case ring them back at the number given on your written statement as it could be anyone) or they will write to you. If they are really worried that your card is being misused they will block it and wait for you to contact them.

Received but not opened.

I receive similar messages, supposedly from various other banks, almost every other day.
They all go the same way, 'unopened into the bin'.

Ah, so it is a spam email after all, then. Thanks for the confirmation/advice.
I've been Rx'ing the very same email for several months now, but since I don't use HSBC, couldn't help wondering what it was all about (and no, I didn't open it).
It's very well done because it certainly looks bona fide.

Perhaps some of the more computer literate Mayhemers can elaborate/confirm.
Have been told that if you "preview" a Spam message without opening it you are confirming the recipient (yourself) as a valid address and you will continue to get more spam from the same source.
Also spammers are adept at sending emails which appear to emanate from a legitimate address. >>:-( >>:-(

No- only if they check which of their mails get returned as "address unknown", then by a process of elimination they will know yours is a "good" one. I doubt they bother with this however, as it doesn't really cost them anything to keep sending to non-existent addresses.
I no longer get these mails as I use Google Mail to collect all my mail from my various addresses, and their spam filter is excellent, even getting those that appear to come from legitimate addresses. It generates very few false positives also.

That is correct - and easily done.

Also, some spammers, purporting to be official companies, will use the same layout and imagery in their emails as those used on the official site. (You can right-click a graphic to check the source: it's often the same one - stored on the same server - as the bona fide one). The only differences are links. What can appear to be an official link, like this one www.hsbc.com can take you somewhere else entirely. If you're not sure about where a link goes, you can check it without committing yourself to following it with a right-click. Then "copy link location" or check "properties" (depending on your browser) to see where it actually goes.

Hi Barrie & Andy,

Thank you both for the elaboration and explanations.
Feel a lot more confident now in dealing with spam.

Once again thank you both, very much appreciated.
