And what's the cure? It is really loud and annoying...

Playing with funnel length may obtain satisfactory results but then I think you would be lucky there. I would think there would be a hole for incoming air ? Play with a few tricks to smooth out the flow. On full scale boilers this is done with directing vanes.....Don't make anything permanenet until satifactory results are obtained. It my require several actions including a muffler on the intake etc..... I'm not an expert mind you ?

Ps Bernhard has a point though...  :-))

I have the same problem with my big  horizontal Maccsteam boiler.   It only howls at when the burner is firing at full chat so quietens when the EGV cuts in.   Mike suggested a number of things including swapping from Butane/Propane mix to pure Butane.  I've not tried that yet though as I'm using up my cans of mix for testing.

Could someone please answer this question too?

Hi all,

I have a question. What thread do the tiny valves used by Hemmens for the water gauge have?
It can be seen in this picture, it's the one close to the burner:

I'll see about the burner, will try to cover some air holes or so. If not I'll get rid of it and use another. The problem is I am not going to use this boiler in a boat, but more at home to test other engines etc.

Rather than swap the type of gas you should swap the injector, it sounds to me like you both have too small an injector- try the nect size up- you can get them on eba-rgain-ay for next to nothing.

Hi Greg

Thanks for that idea.   I'll look into it when the boiler and I are next together!   I presume the size of the injector is marked somewhere on the body.

Cheers

Greg, I assume you mean the gas nozzle? You could be right, it's possible that Hemmens didn't use the propane 35% /butane 65% mix i'm using and maybe that's why it's not burning well. I'll try to take the twin poker burner apart and see what nozzle size is in there.

Hi Guy,

I'm not sure whether the injector is marked- but an email to the manufacturer should be able to reap rewards.

Kno3,

Yes the nozzle is the injector. Its also possible with the age of the boiler that the injector port has been damaged or scored by overheating etc.

For the cost of renewing it it's worth a try.

I have had similar problems with some of the burners I made to play around with. I ended up making another housing with smaller primary air holes and more secondary air holes. My Cheddar burner which has large primary holes and only a few secondary ones is also noisey. Try blocking off one or two primary holes with your finger and thumb to see what difference it makes to the noise. It will make the flame go yellow but you can fix that with more or larger secondary holes. Hope this helps, Ian.

Hi Kno3, you are asking what the thread size is on the tiny valves namely the valve from the lubricator and water gauge blowdown valve.
well if memory serves me right they are 3/16" by 32 ok.
i have some in a spares box so I will check the thread to make sure for you ok.
right just checked and they are as above ok.
hope that helps

cheers

Bernhard: Thanks for asking, I have bought a suitable valve for my boiler and now a suitable (I hope) engine too.

Gyronuts: I think Marvon Maritime is the boiler maker. However I have seen them coupled to Hemmens engines before, so I can't be sure.
