just a little introduction...
« on: May 30, 2010, 06:51:00 pm »

Hi, im new here. i got directed to this site from bikersweb.co.uk im a complete newby when it comes building model boats, so need all the advice i can get.

ive borrowed my uncles model trawlers for the last few years, and although they're fun, ive always had a bit of a thing for battlehips, always wanted 1, and decided that i want my own now. so realy i need as much advice as possible.

so i want some sort of warship, preferably a destroyer or battleship, and ideally it'd have enough power to be used on a river. Not talking rotating turrets and lights etc now as that'd all be a bit complicated and expensive for me right now.

sorry, i know im being pretty vague, i just know that the image i have in my head is far too expensive for me right now, have a very limited budget!

really need a list of specific parts, and either a certain kit or plans and rough cost of build so i can add it all up and see what i can afford atm.

thanks in advance for any help.

A lot depends on what you think your skills are up to ...and what you want to build in (Wood ,Plastic, Metal or a combination of all) There are lots of plastic kits around, Some are very simple to build. Some are a bit more challenging  The Flower Class Corvette HMS Snowberry is moderately challenging to build but is a nice War Ship model to learn on and not too costly to buy and she sails quite well ... But the choice is really up to you...

There are still a few retailers on the internet in the UK who are listing them.  For how long, and at what price is anybody's guess (and just how accurately), but they will probably start heading into  the "collector"  <*< zone.

There are some battleship kits out there at 1:350 scale.

have you got any links or websites i could try, all the battleships i find are well out of my price range, being upwards of £500.   i like the sound of the flower class corvette but ive not found anywhere with them.

Google (or search ebay) for 'Revell HMCS Snowberry 1:72 scale' or some variable thereof - that should get you started.

edit:

The last one I bought was from these people - it arrived the next day.

for the Tamiya battleships.  A wander round the site will give various others, but for installing radio control its best to start with something of a reasonable size to avoid crossing the miniaturisation hurdle.  Battleships are good because they have a lot of "downstairs" compared to not too much upstairs, making for a stable model without too much effort.  Of course, a bigger model will (usually) cost proportionately more by volume.

Why not go for one of Glyn Guest's destroyer or cruiser designs? A real build and a lot less fragile than a Flower. PM me if you like, and I'll see if I can dig out a plan and build article for you.
