Pendant numbers

  I had assumed that warships flew their pendant (or pennant) number. But look at this photo of a Fairmile C.

  Its pennant number is Q330 (though the Q is not shown on this particular boat), but it appears to be flying R88? Other photos also show R as flag superior. Can anyone explain this to me?

I was always under the impression that Naval vessels flew their call-sign, not their pennant numbers, but I could be wrong; after all I wasn't a bunting "idoit"! %)
