Scratch build 10 Rater
« on: June 11, 2010, 02:12:48 pm »

Hi everyone,
I'm thinking about building a 10 Rater yacht from scratch.
Although I've done a fair bit of model boat building from kits including yachts, I've never attempted a scratch build before.
Sooooooooo, if some of the knowledgeable lads out there would kindly point me in the right direction, I'd be most grateful.
I see that Cornwall Boats sell 10 Rater plans.
Thanks in advance

Hi again

If I go ahead with this project I would definitely go down the route of plank on frame and not a moulding for the hull, and I would also plank the deck.

Advice is needed in these areas, what sort of wood for starters?

Having built a number of yachts i would plank over shadows which will give you a empty shell when removed :-))
you could use 1/8th cedar strip or liteply 3mm cut to 10-12 mm widths and seal with epoxy giving a very strong hull!

Hi Ken
Thanks for the offer of wood, I'll bear that in mind, and there are no pics as I haven't started yet!

Hi SNOOPDOG2
Thanks for the advice on timber, and as I'm new to scratch building not sure what you mean by planking over shadows.
Having said that the result sounds as if that's what I'm looking for because bulkheads could be a problem when fitting a sailarm or winch etc.

Hi

Thought this may be of interest - it is a build log including all photographs of Traplets Mini-Mumm yacht. Although this is only a 750 yacht it may be of value. The French instructions aren't too difficult.

Hi Brian planking over shadows is similar to on frame you take the hull lines from the plan i photo copy mine one of each glue these with wallpaper paste to 3mm liteply and cut them out to the lines these must be extended above the deck level 2-3" to be fixed to a sturdy base board i use 1x1" timber for this and fix the required distance appart, make sure the deck level is marked and correct then plank from the deck up gluing to the bow and stern frames only and the butt joint of the plank i take the measurement of the distance from deck to keel of the largest frame say 15planks divide this into the bow measurement and this will give how much each plank has to be tapered forward and repeat aft giving 15 equally tappered planks. You can use elastic bands fixed to small hooks on the baseboard to hold the planks in place while drying.!OH and work equally one plank each side try not to get glue on the intermediate shadows i cover the edge of mine with masking tape . when planking is complete cut off the bow and stern Shadow and the hull will then lift off the others leaving you with a open shell :-)) OH when chamfering the butt joint to fit  the plank to fit only do one edge give a neater finish ;)
there must be a better description on the forum somewhere :embarrassed: but it will give you the idea
phew my fingers sore now {-) {-)

Thanks tony52, very interesting and very helpful indeed, and I think you've answered the question posed by SNOOPDOG32.
He recommended that I plank over shadows and looking at the French site I can see exactly what he means.
So thanks everyone I've got plenty of food for thought!
By the way Tony there's an English translation on the French site, just click on "Translate" on the top RH corner of your screen.

Hello Brian,

Have a look at my website to see how I built the hull for my Schooner.
The hull is 72 inches long and is Fibreglass on the OUTSIDE, with foam inside.
NO planks and dead easy to do !!.

John.  :-))

Thanks John, you experts make it look so easy!! As a complete novice to scratch building I don't think I'm in your league but thanks for a very interesting account of your "Bluenose" build.

I've built two plank on frame boats.  Found the book from the US Vintage Model Yacht Group helpful.

Thanks Landlocked, a most interesting site to look at, and I'll be giving it a lot of thought.
