Hi tobyker, spent a week there about 5 years ago. There were some model boats on the Stadtpark lake at Aalst halfway to Brussels, that was a Saturday. And if you fancy a run down to Kortrijk on the A14 south of Ghent, there is a realy good r/c model shop..If i can spell it right...Oundenaardsesteenweg 18 Kortrijk.they have a web site.. Have a great time......... :-))...Smudge

Brugge - absolutely stunning. But don't try driving/parking in it: there's car parks around the outside.

Ter Doest - an amazing 13th century great barn. The woodwork is fantastic. It's a wonder it survived what the country's been through.

Kortrijk - the castle is very impressive.

If you're in Ypres then, yes, the Menin Gate is a must-see, especially at sundown when the bugle plays - also good is the war museum just in the city centre. And Tyne Cot cemetary is very moving.

arrows - dunno but I think there's more wheels than that on the Eurostar thing. I don't think SWMBO will tolerate a model shop visit but thanks for the info - will keep it by me...

There's a really nice little bar just by the bridge in the centre of town. Can't remember the name - saw it on the way in, couldn't read it on the way out!

If you visit the Menin Gate or Verdun, then be ready to be sad and depressed for the rest of the day, and maybe longer. It is a very sobering experience. Enjoy the rest though, some great countryside there, and good food too.

Ghent an excellent place, easy to get to by train from Brussels (eurostar). Interesting canals - all peniches seem to be live-aboards or offices (or boatel). All have shrouded props - some one prop one rudder, some one prop two rudders - one at least two shrouded props and three rudders. Ghent is also bike heaven - thousands of pushbikes, lots of weird bike load and child carriers, two and three wheeled . Check out websites for PLUM, Bikerfietsen, and ligfiets for recumbents (all bike shops in ghent). Of special note is the  free air pump for bikes outside the library! Photos available if requested.
