Low draft Yacht
« on: June 20, 2010, 12:38:50 pm »

I was thinking of building a Thunder Power Victoria, but I have had to shelve the idea, as the pond I want to use is only about a foot deep :((
A Robbie Rainbow 11 is ok and a Comtesse  should be ok a 210mm draft.

Any other Yacht Kits with a low draft I should consider? I have been told that a Micro Magic is just about ok if the pond is full... <:(

You might try a Cat or a Trimaran

I just (roughly) measured the draft on my Thunder Tiger Victoria, and it's under ten inches.
So if you have a foot of water, should be fine.
My opinion; forget the R.Rainbow, horrible!

Im not sure but could you not take a standard hull design and fit a Bilge Keel of half the size of the normal keel, so 12" keel = prob a 7" Bilge keel.
Just an idea  :-)

Fit an Australia type winged keel as seen on the Largs MBC galleons. I'm sure Norry could send you a photo if asked. (ie sit the hull on a half inch thick lead plate - works as a stand as well!)

The wing and bilge keel idea are interesting ideas but i'm not up on them...More research required

My Thunder Tiger Victoria is 9 inch draft. No problem in shallow water.

Stay away from the cheap Chinese RTRs. Guaranteed to dissapoint.

The Victoria is still in existance. It has a big following'

The Odyssey is also significantly smaller.

Vic. 78cm
Ody 61cm

17cm at that scale is a BIG difference.

I looked at the Odyssey before buying the Victoria. The former looks much smaller. In addition, size matters when it comes to performance. I am not sure how the Odyssey would fare in stronger winds.

Personally I would shop around and try to find someone who has a Victoria in stock. Or wait, or try another boat of about 80cm in length with a reasonable draft. I am not sure of the draft on the MicroMagic, another boat that comes highly recommended.

Tiger, As the pond I want to sailin in is very small, smaller may be better. The Micro magic works ok, but the keel grounds if the water level drops couple of inches.

Hi Dekan, I have just purchased a model of an 8metre yacht. This is being produced by a member of a local club. It is superb quality, comes with a colour choice, the hull is fitted with keel weight included, rudder fitted, deck and sails, all for a very reasonable £135. If tis sounds interesting PM me fo more details. By the way, the reason for your question in the beginning, it has a draft of about 9 inches.

Somewhere to put the small pond.  {-)

Just thought of another candidate for sailing in a shallow pond

Aussie 11 benefits from a few mods, but is good for small, shallow ponds.  Hopefully its still available.
