H.M.S. ILLUSTRIOUS by Airfix
« on: June 28, 2010, 08:02:15 pm »

I have assembled the kit of the HMS Illustrious by the plastic model manufacturer Airfix.

There is not much to say as everything was provided and all I had to do was follow the pictures.

There were no words of instructions at all, so I started at the first picture and ploughed through the build.

I present a pictorial journey from beginning to end and wish I hadn't painted her as she looks much better in original grey plastic.

I'll start with the kit opened on the bench and use the pictures I took for the " What's in the box" section which I posted earlier.

When I saw the lifeboats I couldn't rest painting them.

Then it all goes wrong.  I have a paintbrush in my hand and 'set too' with vigour.

      Your wait is over.   :o   The thread is now finished.      :} :} :}

Thank you for your kind comments. Yes I do have a coal house next on the agenda, if I can find the energy.  No more Airfix for this kiddie. Total build time was 10 hours.  8)

Extremely fiddly indeed, but a nice challenge. Pity about the paint job.  %)

Next build of the Glasgow Paddle tug has been started and keeping it a secret,   :embarrassed: so the coal house can wait until the approach of winter.

I thought I'd just get on with it quietly with no blog.   ok2

Hy Ken
You certainly kept the Glasgow quiet, you never mentioned it last time we had a cuppa.

I didn't even know about it until I mentioned I might buy another boat to 'Er indoors'.  "Not till you build the one you have in the loft first" was the the reply, so I've had to do what I'm told.   %)

Shouldn't take long as there's only 400 parts, then it's back to my beloved TUGS.

You should share the build ken, I like seeing your builds.

I've just completed my modified wyeforce. Need to build a towing barge now if you have any plans?

Thank you for the compliments. I do like constructing these boats, but don't don't want to over-do the Blogs. This is boat number 12 now so, will the next one be unlucky.  ;)

Sorry I don't have any plans for barges, but they seem simple enough to construct. It's making them look nice that would take the time, I imagine.

Ken, If your are superstitious, why not number the next boat 12a and the one afterwards number 14?

Statistics have shown that the unluckiest number is 22, apparently everyone's guard is down then.

By the way you have a good wife who allows this large number of boats, I only have 10 in my fleet! I am also trying my luck at a plastic kit, a Revell 'Glasgow' T2 oil tanker and only now do I realise how fiddly the parts are.

I thought your Red Pelican was quite unlucky, i wouldn't like to think what could possible happen to boat number 13  %)

Well after a wait of over a year, i got my hands on a Lusty,[Airfix finally released it]  then i find out White Ensign are doing an etched brass up-date set for her at close to nearly £60.00,  got to save for that now! lol!  Just thinking next year will Airfix bring this kit out as say the Ark Royal!
Good build on yours Ken.

Funny you should say that, as had an e-mail back off Airfix, yesterday 15 th Sept, and they said got no planes to bring out HMS. Daring, maybe because White Ensign do one in resin, as for HMS.Astute Hobby Boss are bringing that out later this year or early next!

Hi,
The small boats are not lifeboats, they are Gemini craft, and would be painted grey not lifeboat orange. Not seen any orange painted boats in the Royal Navy. Please don`t think that I am being too critical in my comments. I am building this model at present, correct colour for boats is grey.
