have been given a 12 volt 12 amp battery i have a 4 amp charger dose that mean it will take 3 hours to charge no wise cracks please

If this is a 12volt 12amp gell cell then at 4amp charge stand well clear. These batteries are only ment to be charged at about half an amp per hour as they are sealed and cannot vent the gases.

Just because a 4amp charger can deliver 4amps, it doesn't mean it will. Unless its a smart charger, it needs monitoring with an ammeter. The current will reduce as the charge progresses, but, as Alan has said, charging at too high a rate is BAD.

If you have a 12 volt Gell Cell battery charger this will charge your battery, it will just take longer.

Nah - best answer is to get a meter. I saw one in Craplins the other day at about 7 quid. The first time it saves you from buying either a new battery or a new charger its paid for itself. The second time you're in profit.
