Laser Pointers
« on: July 22, 2010, 02:31:30 pm »

Seems the Morons have found a new Hobby. Pilots landing at Dusseldorf Airport at night have reported they are being targeted by people armed with Laser Pointers whiich are directed into the Windscreen or Side windows, dazzling said pilots while doing the landing approach. This is not an isolated incident, it is a common, almost weekly, occurance. Also Rescue Helicpters and Air Ambulances have been targeted as they land at Hospitals. The pilots report the incident to the Police, but they have no chance of catching anyone. There has also been reports of car drivers in the Dusseldorf area being dazzled from Motorway bridges. Can you understand the Mentality of such a person?

Although this behaviour is quite reprehensible it should't be unexpected. I guess it all depends on the strength of the thing. New gear, new ways of using it. Again, going back to my description of kitting a "Tide" class RFA out for the "Armilla" patrol thing in the mid 1980s we were equipped with an industrial strength version of this. Specifically designed to either blind incoming pilots or severely dissuade them from going further. Didn't work for reasons I wrote about in my "saga". BY.

Unfortunately there are rather too many cretinous individuals about. If it wasn't shining lasers at aircraft then it would be heaving rocks off motorway bridges, vandalising life saving equipment along riverbanks or hero worshipping murderers on the run etc. Sterilisation might be a suitable remedy...

This crap has been going on at Seattle's airport for maybe a couple of years.  No crashes yet.  As to sterilizing the perpetrators when caught, use a dull, rusty knife or a .22 pistol.   <*< :police:

It's been happening here in Australia for a while. I seem to remember an aircraft being lasered while on short finals into Melbourne's Tullamarine airport 2 or 3 years ago. A helicopter was similarly attacked earlier this year in or near Sydney. Thankfully there have been no crashes as a result of this dangerous practice...yet.

Strip them apart, crank the output power down, think photo diode, think strategically-placed reflective mirrors.... Ideal break-beam burglar alarm system.

Perhaps that "solution" would just give rise to yet more anger. For myself, I'd lke to see the legal limit for buying alcohol raised to age 21. I'd also like to see drug trafficking treated in a similar way that Singapore uses. But most of all, I'd like to see some sort of cohesion in the way we (as a country) educate our young people. BY.
