Noise !
« on: August 01, 2010, 07:17:18 pm »

The only thing slowing down my rebuild is the VERY NOISY Prop coupling.
I feel this question has been asked before, but has anyone managed to cure it (I dont really want  to have to replace the prop tube, fit a new coupling, etc).
I found that packing it with grease seems to effect a temporary cure, but once the grease works it's way out, the racket returns!
I'd thought about packing it with Silicon bath sealer, which turns rubbery when set.

I had thought that actually, but I thought I'd have a go at improving it first (if thats possible !).
I'm amazed that such a small, basic plastic item can kick up such a noise !

The only way to improve it John, is to replace it.

Try replacing the centre part of the coupling with silicon tubing, the type used for glo engines exhaust. I also bed the motor mount on a bed of silicon bath sealant.

Arrow5, thanks for that, but my coupling is the "Dog bone" type, which is standard on the Dickie.
But that trick with the silicon tube is a good idea (yes, I've also had problems with that type of coupling too !)

Hi John, The best way i have found to get rid of noise on these couplings is to put a sleeve of heat shrink tubing over the coupling and shrink it down,It has the effect of taking up all the slack in the coupling but still leaving it flexable and eliminating the noise!!

Hi Bill, I tried your heat shrink suggestion; TOTAL TRANSFORMATION - VIRTUALLY SILENT RUNNING !!
 A stroke of genius !
All other Workboat owners should take note of this Top Tip !

                                               Many thanks                    John

The heatshrink idea has been around for a while we used to use it on the UJs on the tamiya RC cars back in the 80s
