HELP!! Kyosho Dolphin outboard shaft broken
« on: August 02, 2010, 05:17:08 pm »

I've put this in the main boating forum but have added here as I'm desparate! As a newbie I have just completed hours of work building a Kyosho Wavemaster catamaran to replicate my (full size) race boat. First shake down with the standard motor it snapped the flexi shaft, and I hav'nt even fitted the brushless w/c motor yet! Now I discover they are obsolete, local shop was no help and I can't find anything on the web. The shaft is a flexi, 120mm long x 3.2mm with 2.5mm squares at each end. Other than buy a complete Groupner unit I'm at a loss as to what to do to stop it turning into a static. Any help would be much appreciated to save an old retired racer from despair.

Have you got a pic of the part and the boat? might be able to convert it to a ridged shaft if you cant find the right size flexi shaft.. try google searching for flexi shafts there are tons on the market!

Thanks guys,
I don't really want to convert to rigid shaft, I prefer to keep it as a true outboard. I can find a longer 3.2 dia shaft I could cut to length but then have the problem of making the end at the output shaft square to fit the shaft, at the motor end I can leave it round and use a coupler so thats not so much of a problem. Looking on the web this does appear to be a perrenial problem.

I was thinking that, but it seemed a bit of a bodge, if I solder tin the end and then file it will it maintain the strength as it will take away the wire thickness? The originals look like they have been pressed.
Could try tinning and pressing in a vice with smooth jaws? Any one done this?
I was hoping I was going to get someone who had the same unit and had an easy way. Nothings easy in life!

I don't think so, yours is 220mm long, the one I need is 120mm, there is no mention of the dia so it may be 3.2 and able to be cut of to length. The correct one is Kyosho part no K94631-3, can you still get those as spares in the states?

Thanks Frank
Thats great, I have emails winging everywhere, see what comes up. The Kyosho site shows the shafts listed and in stock, BUT, when I tried to buy 5 of them, they don't supply outside of the USA!! Come on guys there is life outside!
Don't suppose there is an American on this site who would buy them and ship to me?
