Gepard class fast attack craft
« on: July 20, 2010, 03:33:41 pm »

Hello all.
Few years back I've got hull for Nerz in 1:25 made of fiberglass. I also bought plans which are very detailed but  dimensions are flawed . I have few CD with photos of details but I need advice how to redraw plans.    Does anyone have any information about dimensions of this class including armament on deck and superstructure. Any help will be appreciated.
All dimensions I have are these:
Displacement: 391 tonnes
Length: 57.60 m
Beam: 7.80 m
Draft: 2.60 m
Propulsion: 13,235 kW
Speed: > 40 knots
Electronic warfare
and decoys: Decoy launcher HOT DOG
Chaff launcher DAG 2200 Wolke

Armament: 1 x OTO-Melara 76mm gun
4 x MM38 Exocet anti-ship missiles
1 x GDC Rolling Airframe Missile launcher, 21 cells
2 x MG50-1 machine guns

Hi,

I got hull only as plans at the time were not available. It is nice hull, very well made, of Gfk glass and polyester resin. Not best choice for me as I am bit allergic to this stuff- I like epoxy better. But on the other hand there is not much work on hull itself, soo... Plans I have are well interesting at least. They are quite detailed, but according to Mr. Seckel  they are flawed so I need references about dimensions to redraw and compare parts. I found basic dimensions about 76mm gun, with few other informations I hope compare things. Uh I forgot I did got hull from SBW.

Few drawings of gun:

and few informations of model:

 Hi there.
Are you going to make the weapons your self from scratch, as SBW supply all the weapons for it.  There are very
detailed pictures of the weapons on the SBW site.   http://www.harhaus.de/ also supply plans for the 143A, his may be more
             accurate.

            http://www.udos-modellwerft.de/marine.htm   Also supplys the 143A

some pictures of weapons from sbw site may be what you are looking for.

                             cheers frank..

mmmm the OTO-Melara 76mm gun  >>:-( ...whilst many nations navies chose this weapon in the 80's.......I did have the displeasure of supervising maintenance on our Australian FFG's as equipped with such devices - Derek

I take it you do'nt like them Derek - as 56 Navies had them fitted I assumed they were
the bees knees

Geoff......I had acknowledged     "many nations"'.....you confirmed "56 Navies" & so from this arms take up one could conclude the weapon was ....."the bees knees"

From a technical point of view........ brilliant :-))...from a mechanical maintenance perspective >>:-( .....you just don't engage your hands or fingers into the rotating element even when all hydraulic accumulators are discharged & isolated......

My mouth must be closed........ :police: - Derek

The fact that so many "navies" use an item does not attest to its efficiency.
Generally these purchases are made by the bean counters and politicians. <:(
An example, Australia is switching to 155mm medium artillery and mothballing its 105mm field artillery.  <:(
Not because the 155 is a better weapon than dare I say the pommie 105 but 155 is standard Yank isue and as Australia wants to be operable with US, so we change our guns.  >>:-( <*<

Well...
I am very glad that this guns are so world wide spread That might give better Chance to find more info about dimensions??
Still I must find length of exocet launcher and RAM if somebody could point to right direction, please :}?.
About SBW- there is available  kit for this boat but in 1:40- in 1:25 there is not yet available much so I would like to build myself as much as possible. About plans you mentioned -I have them and that is the set I mentioned as very good at first glance but not so good when you compare dimensions: for example height of the superstructure is to high for about 1/3 to 1/4 of dimensions respectively, and that is main reason I am asking for help.

I found this drawing of Gepard on web and then I compared few things already known so Exocet launcher should be 5,5 m long and wide 1,2m ,  for RAM I found only dimension of rocket with length 2,78 m but no dimension of launcher itself. Here is another question how hush hush is all this and how stupid is to question this publicly. Few things are available on web but still. Credit for this drawing goes to original up loader. If it bothers somebody I will remove it.

Hi sjoormen.
The Type 143A Gepard class is Germany's last class of missile fast attack craft  and the only one still in service with the German Navy since 1990.

It is planned that Gepard class vessels will gradually be supplemented by Braunschweig class corvettes from 2008 on and to be replaced by a new class of corvettes around 2015.

So as you can see the Leopard class is an old ship and will be paying off soon so I don`t think anyone will complain about the plans you
 posted.

Options  get a revell kit and scale it up. one on e-bay just now

Fast Attack Craft Type 143A Gepard 1:144 (Revell 05005)  ebay  Artikelnummer: 230503411242
 ends 1st Aug

or use a card kit and scale it up   e-bay Item number: 250670266842

item ends 28 Jul, 2010

                    cheers Frank

I built the Revell kit last year - it's a very nice kit (as is the Albatros-class they also produced) with a lot of detail, so would be a very good "3D reference" to help with building a larger R/C model. I found a lot of high-res closeup photos of the real ships online (most of P6124 Nerz so this is the one I built mine as) but can't remember the link(s); I'll post them here if I find them again. A Google search for "gepard klasse schnellboot" might turn up some useful results.

Can't find the exact site where I found the photos, but it looks like http://www.schnellboot.net is the best reference site for these ships (and other German missile boat + corvette classes). The site is a bit hard to navigate (especially if you don't speak much German) but there are a lot of photos there, as well as many links to related sites.

Thanks for help, guys I will see what I'll find.Revell's Gepard , that is good idea. As for photos I have few of them (also Nerz) bigger problem are drawings
This one I posted is very near I think. But still there will be lots of redrawing. I am not very good drawer but I hope I will manage with help of photos and with few dimensions.
Dimensions I know for now are ones I mentioned earlier, any new information is welcome.
Even Mr Seckel offered help with plans but he is very busy so it will probably take some time and it is very hard to wait and look empty hull for so long if you know what I mean.

On the RAM launcher, the cradle that holds the launcher and its baseplate are slightly modified from the same parts on the US Navy's Phalanx 20mm Gatling gun based close in weapon system.

Thanks for information guys I should have asked here on forum before all this pointless  searching I made.  About RAM is that 11 or 21 cell launcher -I know there is difference but I am no specialist, so...  Nice find this Hasse modell I knew that they are in the business but it never occurred to me that I could ask them about informations. I will report how it goes O0 O0

The Gepard has the 21 round launcher.

The 11 round launcher is a Phalanx mount with the 20mm gun replaced by the missile launcher. This was trialled on HMS Edinburgh a few years ago and is used on the US Navy's Littoral combat ships Fredom and Independence.

Hi Frank
I am not quite sure about photos. CD's I got are from Mr. Seckel- he made them and he sent them along with hull of boat.
There are four CD with photos and one with film with one voyage(I don't know right term ) I must check them out I didn't look at them for while now.

I tryed to upload few photos but I have problems with photobucket  >>:-(.
I have few questions about polyester resin as I have only made epoxy hulls.
What is best thing to glue with- Polyester resin with or without microbaloons, or glue like for example Uhu plus acrylit
Is epoxy based glue any good on polyester?

If you are thinking of casting your own fittings I would recommend using polyurethane resin not polyester resin.

Polyester resin is the same resin as that used for fibreglass. It is brittle when cast and smelly and messy to use.

Polyurethane resin is much better. The type I have used has no odour when liquid and it is not sticky so pours much better. Once cured it is more like the plastic found in plastic kits.

In either case I always use superglue to stick them to themselves or to other materials, however I have never tried to stick them to wood, were I think epoxy would be the only way to go.

Well I never tried casting, so that is another skill I must learn.
No I was thinking about gluing ployester resin and wood together.
As I was saying I only have experiences in epoxy to which I glued metal or wood, but never before I had glued polyester.

Few photos I took, well I tried to take. {-)
Not that boat is too big ( no such things as to big model) but my workshop is too small to take decent photo.
Boat is 2,3 m long and as it looks it will weight around 30 kg (rough estimatewith water test).
For comparison motors are size of speed 900 torque
