Setting of prop in Korts nozzle.
« on: August 07, 2010, 01:40:47 pm »

Afternoon all,

I'm just setting my prop into the nozzle, my thinking is the back of the prop should be lined up with the back of the nozzle, is that the same view, my fellow tuggers have..?   %)

My home made nozzle copper tube is 50mm ( mouth ) wide by 40mm long. :D

Thats the way I've done mine Chris.

See your location is sometimes Blairgowrie, used to go there quite a lot when I drove for Christian Salvesen.

Hi Dicky,

Thank you for that, just seeing how the mighty all knowing forum had to say....  :-)

Ahh yes sunny blairgowrie, have family up there, me and the kids use Davey park sometimes, alittle run down... not a true boating pond but ldeal, outside of the weed season. Were you transporting the fruit or wood? Going back up soon for the forth time this year.....  :-))

cheers

Used to be a good firm to work for when I was there Ned, it used to be the largest storer and shipper of frozen food in Europe. Mercedes used to design trucks specially for us. All gone to pot now thanks to the money men.

i always set the centre of the prop (mid way from front face and back face) with the rudder post they steer very well going astern then. rudder post about 1/3rd back from front face of Kort if it will be a steerable Kort
works for me as some may know

To be the most efficient in forwards and reverse, the prop blades should be 1/3rd in to the kort from the front face.

It takes quite a bit of setting up to get a steerable kort to clear the prop blades though, especially if the tips of the blades are a close running fit in the kort.

Hello Toes,

Hows wee Scoot these days, seen anymore action since portsmouth...?  :police:

I have a cm of shaft left to play with, so I'll see how it goes on the trials.  %%

I make a circle of thin ply to fit in the nozzle, drill a hole in the centre, slide this over the shaft, then the prop needs to be about a third of the way from the forward end of the kort as spoken about earlier in this post. I tend to fix my nozzles first, then fit the rudder shaft with clearance for the nozzle to turn, the shaft can be held in place with blue tack to check, and then resin used for the final fix.

Thats a grand idea, I'll try that on my next tug. Thanks   :-))

Thanks for the tip. I am busy with fitting my Kort which I made from some plumbing today and was just sitting here trying to work out positioning.

Hello, when setting a prop in a kort nozzle, the centre line through the prop should be the centreline of the
rudder shaft, that is assuming that the prop in question is made for a Kort with the correct blade profile.

Hi Nemesis

It got a 45mm in a 50 home made set up, the 50 mm korts got thrown off second time on the Boating pond.  %) Looking to put all the good advice into another larger tug some when in the future.  O0
