USS Olympia to be scrapped/sunk?
« on: August 07, 2010, 08:59:24 pm »

Can't believe it, she needs a $20 millon refit so they are thinking of having her scrapped or sunk as a reef and they say she is the oldest steel warship afloat! (hang on isn't that HMS Warrior?)
Its in this months "Ships Monthly" and internet sites like this one http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Dennis%20Donovan/102
Do you think they are serious or is this a way of trying to generate income for reparing her?

HMS Warrior (Launched 29 Dec 1860) is built of iron Not Steel and was built 30 + years before the American one... ,It seems a shame that the Old Girl can't be preserved but the USA doesn't (I believe) have a national heritage scheme like the UK, I think that preservation over there is up to the local ,Town,City, State or Museum that owns  the vessel....

On a red hot day in 2009 I walked around USS Olympia.
Aside from a hand full of staff with paint tins in hand I was the only person on board.
Might explain the problems they are having.

It will probably go the same way as Her Majesties Victorian Ship 'Cerburus' which was a steel hull, steam power and sail.
See the website for the efforts being made to preserve what's left and the history of the ship.

No sails
First warship to dispense with sails entirely

From those photos, what a beautiful old ship the Olympia is, and an awful shame if it is to be scrapped.

The monitors Cerberus and her sister ship the Magdala were
the first british warships to have low freeboard, breastwork protection, a central superstructure with fore and aft turrets and the first with sail power dispensed with.

For the voyage from England to Australia the Cerberus was fitted out with three masts and sails, but these were removed on arrival in Australia.
