SUPERTANKER 8ft
« on: August 10, 2010, 12:30:21 pm »

Hi all, does anyone know where I can get plans for a modern supertanker/LNG carrier from?? Got a Models By Design 8ft hull to base it on. Seen some for the Exxon Valdez but may be a bit controversial to sail in our nature reserve! %) I may just do a freelance design inspired by photos otherwise, thanks, Dave. :-)) :-))

Thanks for the info, some good ideas there. Got the hull already, big 8ft monster from Models By Design. She'll be a fair beast when done, doubling up as detailed scale working model and for the club to use for tug towing. Will start a build thread when can get her out of the shed and on the workbench! Dave. :-)) :-)) :-))

I had worked it out and you could do the RFA Leaf class at 1:72scale (if I had my sums right  :embarrassed: )

Just an observation on the 'Oil Challenger'. She wasn't a tanker but an offshore supply vessel built to carry pipe in the N. Sea. As such she was the only supply vessel with its bridge and accommodation sited aft. It never caught on and every other PSV before and since has had its bridge and accommodation sited for'd. I believe she is still trading somewhere.

Anyone got drawings/plans for Deans Marine Liz Terkol I could buy/borrow?? Could do something similar to her with the hull on 1/32 scale, would just have to be stretched a bit! Cheers, Dave :-))

yes you could also use 1/76th (oo scale) or 1/160th (N-scale) measure up how many times 2.5m goes into your width at 1/76 and 1/87th,  and see how they fit

Warsash Maritime  Academy have a section where they uses manned models for teaching purposes....get IN and ride stuff....... although they are probably not very detailed, they may be able to point you in the direction of some hull plans/ideas an area in which I expect the models are fairly accurate.

http://www.mannedmodels.com/

I think once the hull is sorted, a tanker / container ship could be made quite easily from pictures. having worked on many, its alot of repetative constructions stuck together!

But also they aren't 8 foot..... was just an idea of where some guidance on large models might be available.

There is a program called Delf ship that you can down load to your PC. This program also has many ship that you can also download many are of large ships. In the program you can change the design if you wish to make the ship slightly different from what they have. You can print up the side profile and overhead plan view and also the frames of the ship.

You can also make your own design from the program as well.
