Transom hung rudder hinges
« on: August 10, 2010, 02:54:16 pm »

Trying to finish off a couple of boats before my workshop becomes too damp again (W I N T E R)!

All my previous sailing boats had under hull rudders with a shaft/tubes etc. My ECO Catamaran uses transom hung rudders. Just can't seem to find any suitable hinges. Any ideas?

Hi Ned, thanks. I use them on full size boats and for them they are easier to get! I googled "Model Gudgeons and Pintles" and got hundreds of hits for them for full-size boats! Found a couple of YouTube videos on how to install them as well! I found some do-it-yourself bits at Cornwall Model Boats that I could probably adapt:

I'll do some more searching.

How about 4 eyebolts, 2  on the transom, 2 on the rudder and a spindle running through them?

I used this on a 10ft dinghy, works well.

. . . Yes, Eye bolts are probably about the simplest. I can bolt them through the transom(s) but not through the rudder blade holders. The ends of the bolts/nuts will fowl the rudder blades. Pity, I can't see any way around it. I do want the blades to be able to pop up (against an elastic band) if i hit something floating in the water. It's similar to the original full-size craft. I might work on having eye-bolts fitted to the transoms and a strip of metal with two tabs on the rudder. I do need to get on and do something. Been just looking at it for a few weeks now.

Ned, I'll send you some details of the boat in a PM

What about small brass cabinet hinges - as long as the actuating lever (tiller) works through the same axis as the hinge you shouldn't have any issues.
I used 30mm hinges on an electric powerboat with twin outdrives I cobbled up once - worked fine.

see the pictures of the black rudders on this thread...
