Increasing 2.4Ghz Range
« on: August 14, 2010, 09:01:32 pm »

Been trying to figure ways of extending the range on my ongoing project which I will be using 2.4ghz radio gear.  Whislt searching, I came across this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-2-4GHZ-WIFI-Antenna-Booster-WLAN-RP-SMA-9727-/190429495441?pt=UK_Computing_Networking_SM

What do you reckon, think it will increase my max range if I can connect it to my rx?  I suppose for the price it might just be worth a punt

Most modern radio systems have a range in excess of 1000 mtrs.  Very difficult to see your model at that distance, what are you flying?

I've tested my Spektrum dx6i 2.4 to a point where I can't distinguish which way the model is going anyway so I really can't see why anyone would want more.

I guess if you are flying a 1/4 scale Lancaster bomber it might be something to consider but as I would only have to walk a lot further to pick the bits up I'd rather stay closer anyway.

Ray
I think you'll find that this gizmo is intended to be connected to the transmitter, not the receiver.

Yes, it looks like a TX "improver".  Probably make it illegal, I imagine that the DTI rules specify a max radiated power, and the TXs as supplied will probably be at that limit.

For your info, this is an arial to be fitted to an existing wi fi router. Some basic routers do not have ariels on them and this gives them extended range upto 100 meters. I would never add this to an existing tx as I would be sure it was designed for that function.

Some 2.4 radios let you change a setting to U.S. where their laws for 2.4 power output are greater giving you more range! I know my Spektrum has this setting. Just a thought!
