What is this speed-controller?
« on: August 18, 2010, 09:26:51 am »

Can anyone help me identify this ESC, please?

I bought it in Taiwan, a couple of years ago, but there were no distructions with it, and the shopkeeper knew no English.

OK, the red light indicates Neutral - very handy when it's all hidden inside the boat! <*<

But what does the 'thingy' at the bottom-left do?  I've tried twiddling it - it seems to be a pot rather than a switch, but what is it for?  and how should it be set?

What do you think its Current rating might be?

And, most important, is there any way to make it go from Forward to Reverse without pausing in Neutral?  The pause (or Double Dab to override the pause) works OK from a spring-centred 'stick' but is impossible from a ratchet stick.

Regards,

Not that it really helps you %), but you've almost certainly got a car ESC there. For cars it is important to have a pause between forward and reverse, but we don't usually need that on a boat.

It points him in the right direction,Barrie. The truck setting shouldn't need the Double Dab.

Phew, you guys are quick.

Yes, it is a car-type controller - where I bought it (Taiwan) they only have Cars or Helicopters or Sh*t-off-a-shovel fast boats.

Martin's link took me straight to the beast - how do you do it, Martin?

Unfortunately, the pretty description is all in foreignese to me:  how can one compare an "18 turn" motor with 5Amps or 10A or 20A?

I have written to the mainlyplanesntrains website, asking for more detailed information, including what difference to expect between Truck, Buggy and On-road modes.

BTW, Stallspeed, I just tried the different settings, and all need a double-dab or an excruciating long wait before being allowed to go astern.

Thanks, Chaps,

An 18 turn motor equates to lots of amps rather than just several.  Is you are going to be pulling a few amps, the ESC should both provide control and survive.  "A few" in this case is the 5-10 amp area, several would be 10-20, and lots would be 20 and above.  Some oriental types claim lots and lots, but it is widely suspected that oriental amps are considerably smaller than ours.
