Short Forecastle Corvette
« on: August 18, 2010, 08:58:21 pm »

Hi all, I have built a modified Flower Class Corvette in 1:72 scale.
It is converted to a "short forecastle Corvette" and is based on the Revell kit.
It is of course RC equipped so that I can use it to protect the merchant shipping on my local pond  :} .
As I had to have a summer project I made this:

I painted it, and it took two days to get the weathering as I wanted it to look ....
I made it as HMS Begonia (K 66) in an early paint scheme I saw in a book:

From above you can see the 4" gun and the wooden deck:

This pic shows a little rust and other dirt:

One more:

The bridge and chimney area, etc.:

I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
I have been detailing it some more and added ropes, blocks, people, anchors and a lot more small bits and pieces. I have also had it in the bath to check how much lead i had to add (and thats a LOT) I use a Robbe 6v 5Ah lead battery and I still had to add almost 600 grammes of ballast!
I now think that a heavy speaker in the bottom wouldnīt hurt at all  :-) .
I "just" have to install the speed controller and receiver and it's almost ready to use.
With a bit of luck I can test sail her next weekend  :-)) .

Warships aren't my cup of tea but that looks fabulous!

The weathering looks spot on - I wish i could do that  :((

I hope to 'sea' some pics of her on the water.

Graff , She really looks the part.  Our first Leiutenant would have had kittens to see the hull
in that state and would of had us painting the ships side before we entered harbour but
I could imagine that is exactly what all the escorts looked like after 3 or 4 weeks of the
North Atlantic in winter. Remember what the ships looked like on the return from the
Falklands. Excellent job.

Thanks for the comments all, I have always liked the look of beaten up and war-weary Warships. I like to build the types of ships that wasnīt ship-shape and therefore I prefer the wartime ships. Not much time for major polishing there  ok2

Very nice work. The look is much more true--A soldier is very seldom in a nicely pressed dress uniform when at the day to day duty of war.

She is a working warships - hard at it!! Well done

Must be a very keen First Lieutenant. He can't get the lads overside with the paint brushes but he makes sure they still holystone the decks to perfection......  %)

I do remember on one occasion when we were returning from Malta to payoff and it was to
be a full crew manning the sides - all the families present we stopped in very calm seas south
of the Isle of Wight and Jimmy the one went off in the whaler did a tour round the ship then
then got the Ch Bosuns mate to organise a "touch up the rust party" so we would look our
best when we entered harbour.  Then when we anchored at Outer Spit Buoy for the customs
to come onboard for their checks he had them out again just to finish the job. I did enjoy
my time in the Nany but BS could be a bit OTT

I love this model. The painting and weathering is superb. I hope my corvette looks as good as this when I'm finished...

I love the look of a battered Corvette. :-))

Out of curiosity where did you get the plans to make the new superstructures? I can see from the pictures that there is a lot of white plasticard involved and would love to build a similar vessel one day.

I am now officially jealous.  Any chance of pics showing the access to the innards?

Excellent work on the conversion!  :-)) - the weathering looks very convincing too. (Are the red patches primer?)
I've often read discussions of the possibility of converting the Revell/Matchbox corvette to a short foc'sle version but until now have never actually seen it done (R/C or static!)  It really changes the overall look of the ship,

Well I have almost tested her now......
I was at a pond that the local MBC uses as a home base, and as it has a good low bridge for pond access, I thought it would be a good place to try it out.
As I had some good cheers from the small contingent of members there, and were told that I would be able to try it without disturbance from other boats, I was ready to go for it.  :-)
I had just sailed out into the pond, when one of the old members decided to threw in his old steam driven battleship!!  <*<
I asked him if he was going to be on the same side as I was, but, no, he would keep on the other side of the bridge.
What seemed like two seconds after that, his ship came rushing into my side of the bridge (where I had just stopped the Corvette, wich by the way was doing very good), and as he seemed to have no throttle on that ship, he had no time to steer obviously, and rammed my Corvette amidships at full speed  :o, wich in that case was like 8 knots!
Needless to say, but that day didnīt end well at all!  :police:
I have a new kit here now, but I will try to salvage what was left from the boat and I will see when I will get around to building it. The hull needs to be replaced, and the fittings on the rear housing......I lost the battery as well, and the one I used is not readily available anymore, so I have to build a new battery-bay too.
I will never sail any of my boats where the MBC are at anymore!

I have now rebuilt the small details on the rear housing and built the "new" hull.
I will have to buy a new propshaft as the old one is so glued to the old hull that it was "easier" to buy a new one  :-)
The decks was salvageable from the old hull and the details on them. So in a few weeks I can have it finished again...... :-))
