Building the Gry Maritha
« on: August 23, 2010, 03:30:38 pm »

About half a year ago I bought an almost new kit of the Gry Maritha. For some obvious reason, the gentleman started working on the hull and stopped right away. The first picture shows the hull in the condition when I received it {:-{ {:-{. With a lot of elbow grease she looks a little different (pic #2). The third picture shows the mechanics for the crane, up-down and left-right. #4 view into the hull with the servos for the crane motor, rudders, various switches and the batteries (unfinished). The motors are  550's with 40mm props with separate ESC's and a self made mixer plus a Raboesch bow thruster. The side door and the hatches are governed by servos with servo slow down electronics (about 8 sec). All mast and deck lights are working. I hope to have the Gry finished in about two to three month.

Kind Regards
Wilhelm

Great job you are doing there. The real ship now carries a dark blue with some cream on the superstructure. Looks quite tired.

Thanks Chris,
I did google various websites and found pictures of the Gry with slightly different colour schemes. The problem is to match the colours with the age of the vessel at a specific time. I try to stay pretty close to the original.

Yes, she has had several variations to the livery over the years, here's my model.

Hi ixion,
beeautiful model, congratulations. Almost all of the pictures I found on the net showed the deck in a green colour, yours is the first one in grey and it looks great.  :-)) I did read a post here that the Gry is almost unsailable, do you have the same experience?

I did fit the deck (with the hatches) yesterday and gave it the first coat. Off to the hobby shop again, need more paint.

The deck is green on my model it must be a trick of the light to make it look grey. As for the Gry being unsailable I find quite the opposite she is my favouirite model to sail very steady on the water and very manoeuvrable.

Hi ixion,
good to know that the Gry behaves good on the water. Sorry with the colour mix-up. It looks grey to me, but I do have a green-red colour blindness. Oh well, my Gry is green, my wife confirmed it. %) :-)

Hello,
here are a few updated pictures of the Gry Maritha. The crane is now working, up-down and left-right. My radio is a six channel 2.4Ghz with 4 proportional channels and two off/on. In order to run also the crane, I had to come up with a solution for two extra proportional channels as required by my layout. I came up with the idea to use channel 6 to switch two proportional channels via a DPDT relay. The arm of the crane is set up in such a way, that it can not swing to the left or right as long as it is in the cradle.

channel 1 = throttle with mixer
channel 2 = bow thruster  -  crane left/right
channel 3 = lights/sound -  crane up/down
channel 4 = rudder
channel 5 = second layer for channel 2,3
channel 6 = deck hatches and side hatch open/close

Here are a few more pics.

Regards

Thanks ixion and Richard,
Richard you asked what's next? There is still some work to do on the Gry and the daughter boat of my SAR-Boat Bermpohl is waiting in the box. I would be interested building the new "Yorkshireman", but it is a little expensive right now. Everything comes to the one who can wait. Christmas is only 3 1/2 month away.

I really like the MS products (except for the white metal rudders and the somewhat flimsy prop shafts).

What a lovely job you've made of her Wilhelm.   :-))

I've always liked Model Slipway models and wanted to build this one. Perhaps if we ask enough, they might bring her back into production.

Cheers

The matter of building Scillonian III will become easier shortly . . .

She is likely to be my next 'big build' when I finish my 1/1 scale motorsailer!
