Beware of this Paypal scam
« on: August 28, 2010, 09:33:39 pm »

This scam is in response to a legitimate for sale item, Harley Davidson motor cycle, here in Oz.

"Thanks for your response, I am quite okay with your price, I need you to understand that i am willing and ready to purchase it right away, put it off the AD site, consider me as your favourite buyer, and Please note that i have a shipper/mover who handles my shipping arrangement anywhere in the world, he would be coming for the pickup, after you have received payment, which would be through paypal, If this is acceptable, advice soon as i am an hydrographer and i am buying this for my Dad,i am at work right now .I can only pay through pay pal at the moment as i do not have access to my bank account online,but i have it attached to my pay pal account, and this is why i insisted on using pay pal to pay,all i will need is your pay pal email address to make the payments,and if you do not have a pay pal account yet,its pretty easy to set one up at www.paypal.com,i will be expecting your email.I have a pick up agent that will come for the pick up after payments has been sorted.
I want you to provide me with the following information for me to proceed with the Payment...
Your PayPal e-Mail Address :
full name:
I have a pick up agent that will come and pick it up after i have made the payments...'

It was from an  @y7mail address which is Yahoo email Oz   >:-o >:-o >:-o
Appears that with your Full name and paypal email the hacker can access your account? <*< <*< <*<

Essex, it certainly is interesting as I also have never banked with them.
The email was probably global as it was addressed to "undisclosed recipients"  >>:-( >>:-(

I guess the HSBC scam is international as I have received a couple of those in the spam folder on my main email account recently.

Yes - with your Paypal email account I can make a payment into your account - what I can't do is take money out. That is how Paypal works, unless you buy something on Ebay and agree to pay through Paypal, when Ebay handle the transaction via your and the seller's Paypal account. In this case you have to log-in to your Paypal account as part of the Ebay checkout.  I must be missing something here as I don't see the scam {:-{

This rings a bell with something I read the other day - He ostensibly overpays you to reimburse the agent, from this you supply funds to pay the agent, the deal falls through because the original cheque or whatever bounced, the agent walks off with his handling fee.  Something like that.
