T5 Confusion
« on: August 30, 2010, 04:24:38 pm »

Having just returned to the RC boats hobby I am still learning all the new stuff!!!

I have started out, straight from the start, with a Planet T5 system. I don't use all the channels on the TX yet, but this will come on the next boat I build.

I am confused ....

I have a 5 Channel TX and a 6 Channel RX. Is there a way to add a 6th channel to the TX to enable the full capabilities of the RX.?

6th channel on the RX is for the receiver pack battery if you don't use the BEC (battery eliminator circuit) on the ESC. it has no function on the TX at all just a power impute, remember if you using up to 5 servo or 3 servos and 2 esc's that a alot of power being drawn from the esc's if you use there form of power... battery's will be dead in under 10 Min's

I have an R6M receiver that has "7" sets of pins marked from L to R

B 1 2 3 4 5 6

The battery connects to "B" and this leaves a total of 6 channels free for connection/control. The T5 Tx unit has only 5 control channels which leaves the 6th RX channel with nothing to do.

Yes, the Giant Cod set is similar - that is a cheap 4-channel transmitter with a 6-channel receiver. The reason is that these items are built down to a price, and cheap standard parts are used where possible. It is probably cheaper to include an off-the-shelf 6 channel receiver than to go to the trouble of designing a special 4 or 5 channel receiver. They go for silly money - £25.82 for a 2.4Ghz Tx/Rx combo and £19.14 for a 35 Mhz pair!!!

These cheap sets are not designed to be upgraded, so there is no official facility to add a channel that I know of. However, the transmitter electronics probably include 6 channels, since that's probably what the basic transmitter chip provides. I know that the Giant Cod 4 channel transmitter has a number of unused sockets on its board, and if you plug a switch into one of them, with a little bit of soldering you get a 5-channel transmitter - here is a link to the forum discussion: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3848

Maybe there is a Planet Users forum, and maybe they have found out how to add a channel...?

I have had my Giant Cod four channel transmitter modded to six channel and it works fine the two extra channels could have been proportional or switched but please don't ask me how it was done cos it is beyond the comprehension of an old man like me I just know it works fine and has done so for a year now, there also appears to be little or no more drain on either the transmitter or receiver batterys

Can you please tell us who did that for you? Was it a commercial service? 5-channel I understand, but there is no mention of a 6-channel mod on the forum....

There are actually 6 channels and a battery pack connection on the Planet Rx not 5 and a bttery pack connection. %)

No problem - knowing that it's possible is 7/8s of the solution.  If you chat to your friend you might like to give him this  URL and ask if he would like to contribute to the discussion: http://www.giantcod.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=3848

all well and good copying for future use but this isnt the planet radio , its for the radio link set ! i cant see why people need to upgrade to a six by modding a four as the prices have come so well down over the last couple of years its as cheap to buy what you need outright !

had my planet tx down to make it a four stick direction spring return, noticed on part the board was what looked like a ref to the 6th channel, some empty connection areas, though how you do it is beyond me

Hello,

Just had a look inside my Planet 5 Tx.
There are quite a lot of solder pads with nothing connected to them.
Most of them are named, one is called "Gyro", must be for the Heli boys.
Anybody got any Ideas ?.
John.
