HMS Penelope
« on: September 01, 2010, 11:08:50 pm »

I was talking to an old boy at the club the other day (older then me anyway) and asked why his yacht was called 'Penelope' was it after his wife, he said no it was a ship I was stationed on in WW2. After discussing some other topics we continued racing our IOM's for the rest of the afternoon then that evening I Googled WW2 Penelope and HMS Penelope came up in many searches to my amazement this guy was lucky to be with us today and I was wondering is there any other survivers out there or were anybodys grandfathers on the ship.
After reading much about the ship and the crew I now look up to the 'old boy' with much respect and gratitude for what he has been through and done for us.

I work with the public and saw this very old fragile looking chap so got him a chair and we just got talking about stuff. He turned out to be a survivor from HMS Dasher. He told me about being in the mess and hearind a small explosion and the lights going out, he got out on to the flight deck and jumped with some friends when the ship started to sink. He told me most people died when the fuel on the water caught fire, he tried to save one of his friends who had been burned but had to let him go after a while. He had tears in his eyes when he told me about it despite it being so long ago. It affected me very much and like SpamCanMan said the things those men did for us and who knew about post traumatic syndrome in those days?!

The Penelope after being in dock for eight days and constantly bombed by the Luftwaffe. Became the "Pepperpot" On the Good Friday whilst in the dock the Captain A.D.Nicholl.RN......."It was now Good Friday.April 3rd. After an early morning raid, I sent for the Padre and said "There are drinking songs and hunting songs. What we need is a shooting song. Can you compose a simple tune and simple words, as crude as you like.?
The Padre took about an hour. I approved it and the bandmaster orchestrated it for the band(Royal Marines) At dinnertime I ordered the Quartermaster to pipe "Hands to lay aft to sing a song"
I climbed to the top of the after turret, megaphone in hand and the words on a blackboard.....
Get them in your sights
And shoot the buggers down
Shoot the buggers up
Shoot the buggers down
As overhead they pass
Just shoot them up the 'bottom'
And-Shoot-The-Buggers-Down
The ships company came doubling aft, grinning as they read the words on the blackboard. The band played, I sang the words through the megaphone, and then they all had a go.The song went with a swing and we felt like taking a bow when there was a hearty round of applause from several hundred dockyard workers, attracted by the sound of the Band. This lighthearted interval semed to cheer everybody up, and during the next few days, I heard snatches of the song with ribald variants of the words"

During the air attacks ,with new damage being inflicted before the old was patched up, is an epic. She wore out her gun barrels, changed just before going into dock. She fired over 5,000 rounds of 4" and over 75,000 rounds of smaller anti-aircraft ammunition. As her Captain put it "It had been a testing time for everbody in the ship and events had proved that a wee chap with a stout heart, was worth ten of a brawny athlete with clay feet."
Penelope escaped from Malta on 8th of april and arrived after close shave in Gibralter on the 10th. With all the wooden plugs jammed into the holes in the ship some even called her "Porcupine".
At the height of the attack the ships cat gave birth to three kittens. She used The bunk in the Captains sea cabin for her accouchement. The kittens were named Bomb,Blitz and Blast.
Among the signals received :-"Penelope from Prime Minister.Bravo"

                                                         cheers Frank

if I remember correctly, C.S.Forester's novel 'The Ship' was based on HMS Penelope. Also brings to mind the famous (apocryphal) signal between her and HMS Antelope when meeting - 'Antelopee meets Penny Lope'.

Going back to my youth, I well remember a lovely stand-off scale HMS Penelope by Glynn Guest in Model Boats magazine (methinks) sometime in the 1980's...has anyone out there got any pics of builds from that set of plans...seems like a nice easy(-ish!) project for the currently boatless...

Plans for both HMS Penelope and her near sister HMS Dido are available from "MyHobbyStores" plans service on the "Model Boats" web site.  Or should I say "ought to be available" in view of the problems that some people have with this site?
Both models look quite handsome and sail well, perhaps they ought to come out of "dry dock" and give me a little more pleasure?

Hi Glynn,

Congrats on the shots of the PennyLope and thanks again for the happy memories, my whole teenage years seem to have been spent either perusing the mag or counting down the days for the next issue to make its appearance at my local newsagent...a month was an eternity in those days! I loved the old ships clean, graceful and unfussy lines and was only kept from building one by my complete lack of materials, know-how, tools, facilities and finances, however the seed was planted and now that I have reached A Certain Age...

Many thanks on behalf of the Model Boats ex-teen readers!
