Ships wheel and binnacle completed.
Photo is a bit yellowy due to bright sunlight, and it's only February.  The wood dust on the deck is where I drilled the holes for the copper eyeleys for the guy ropes of the binnacle.
Photo taken using a Canon G9 in Macro Mode - downside is it enlarges the detail and brings out all the little imperfections.

Mishap or carelessness?

Re the main companionway. I had built the steps and put them to one side, then I edged the companionway opening.
So far so good. The I offered the steps to the opening to make sure it all fitted before putting up the balustrade around the top.
Horror, I drooped the steps down the companionway opening. unfortunately they didn't come to rest on the deck below( the gun deck) but carried on down the lower companionway into the bowels of the ship where they became impossible to retrieve even if I could get to see them.

Soooooo. I have to wait until JOKita are open in the New Year and  persuade them to let me have a new pair of ladder sides and then rebuild the steps.

The joys of modelling - ( My wife thought it funny !!!!!!!)

Hi Ken

Did you ever recover the ladder?  Could it be shook out somehow? Does it rattle about loose inside?

Such a beautiful construction. I take my hat off to you   O0

Cheers...Ken

Never did recover the ladder, it's wedged somewhere inside so doesn't move around.
Jokita sent me a new set of sides so I made up a replacement.

Must use Aperture Mode on the camera next time and increase the depth of focus.
Picture shows the Beakhead Bulkhead Decoration. The doors are hinged but closed, gunports open.
Pilasters painted. roundhouses complete. Bow timberheads in place.

Next job is the forecastle carronades then the bows

Ken, I have just finished a superb book which was a biography of the battle of Trafalgar.  Incredibly interesting to see the story of the battle unfold and just what life was like on board at the time.  A lot of personal accounts was used to give a real feel for the conditions which were generally beyond what we could even comprehend.

Putting together such a beautiful model as you are seems quite a fitting tribute to those men who basically helped to shape the country we live in today.

Fabulous model and a pleasure to watch it go together.

Thanks for the nice comments, much appreciated.
The build has been going for just over a year now, think it will take two more before conpletion.
Hope you won't be bored with the build diary by then !!!!

Every time I go over Westbourne Models , Barry asks me how it is going.  I think he wants me to finish it so he can sell me something else !!!!  Think he's fed up just selling me Zap and Jotika paints !!!

A little more progress. Three photos attached.

One is the stern of the poop deck and shows the knees and flag lockers.

The two of the bows show the head timbers and rails, also the gratings. On the gratings are the stools, hence the expression "going to visit the head ".  I wouldn't have fancied that in a howling gale !!!!!

Time for two more photos.

The one of the figurehead is a bit out of focus..Sorry.   The marine walk is in the background.
The other is of the skylight situated on the poop deck.  windows are glazed

Currently working on the cat heads

Ken,

Your standard of work is of the very highest standard. I applaud you and look forward to seeing more of the build. I know it takes a long time...Mine took 3 years and the last of those was just the rigging.....Worth every minute though.

Now get on with those catheads.... :D

Catheads completed. so no more on the bows for a while now.

Photo shows the poop deck ballustrade, the bits hanging over it are the hanging points for the fire buckets ( to be added later )
The poop deck ladder can also be seen , going over one of the guns.  The bannister to these steps was real fiddly to do, it's made up of three pieces of 1.5mm walnut and had to be horizontal and the top and bottom rail parallel. only a little piece but took several attempts.

Next job is to start on the stern detail

This is an extremely beautiful build. Your work is fantastic.

Are you going to rig it with sails, or bare spars?

I'll rig it with just the spars.

It's difficult to get the sails to look just right and to scale.
Also the sails hide the main rigging and them selves cause a lot of additional rigging
But rigging looks as if it's about a year away; hull to finish and then all the tapering of masts and yards

Ken,

Then add about a year to complete the rigging......Painful but worth it..

That really is a superbly made model O0 Fair puts mine to shame, but in all honesty I have to admit mine is all of 7" long being a very old Marinecraft Kit. :)

Currently reading my way through Alexander Kent's Richard Bolitho novels so my interest has been revived. On this topic I am REALLY MAD >:( Just missed  a back issue of Model Boats on e-Bay with plans and an article for HMS Boxer, a 12 Gun Brig

Anyone know the date of this issue? Not given on the blurb.

Anyway. Great model mate. Keep it up.
