HMS Victory
« on: January 29, 2007, 04:22:30 pm »

Had the kit 2 weeks - Jokita 1:72 scale Victory.
Photo shows the hull carcase coming together. 18 bulkheads. The gunport area is supplied in three sections of ply ( the upper two are fitted ). The lower 2 gundecks are with dummy guns, just the barrels set into wood strips, the lower one can be seen in the photo. The strips are painted black so they won't stand out should anyone look through the gunports. Middle deck is also fitted.
The ply forms the "first"planking to the upper half of the boat, the lower to be planked - my next long job. I soaked the ply well to get it to curve round the bows where it is now glued and pined ) and clamped.

You certainly know how to take on a challenge Ken.  Have to finished the customs boat or are you doing the two together?

The Victory is a superb kit but not something I have anything like the time for.

"Vigilant", the customs boat is 99% finished. Electrics to finish off, if I decide to sail her, and maybe put oars in the ships boats.
Problem is.... she is too tall to get in my Jeep !!!!!!!

First planking completed. ( 1.5mm x 6mm lime planks )
The primary aim of this planking is to provide a base for the second planking which will be in 1mm x 5mm walnut. The important thing is to get the hull shape right with the first planking, use of stealers and plastic wood filling is Ok as they will all be hidden by the second planking.
The elongated verticle hole in the middle row of gunportrs is the entrance port.
The boat is on its working cradle, this will not be the final means of displaying the boat.

Quarter Galleries in place and second planking started.

The quarter galleries are sanded and filled to shape, the windows are glazed. None of the "wood" will show as it will either be painted or covered in decoration.
Same applies to the second planking. below the waterline it will be covered in copper tiles, and above the waterline will be painted.
Any gaps or cracks above the waterline will have to be filled to retain an overall smoothness,  a job I hate doing, hard to be satisfied and it takes a long time !!!

It's sad to cover such a beautiful wood work... even if historical.

Some modellers leave all the wood unpainted, they like their models that way.
I mean to paint Victory as she was at Trafalgar. Paint can also cover a multitude of sins!!!!!

Just about finished the second planking from just below the maindeck gun port to the keel. Can't go all the way up as the centre gun ports did not have lids. In consequence this linings finished flush with the first planking and then were covered by the second planking. i e they need to be lined before the second planking is completed.

Next step is to fit the main gun deck , the inner bulwarks, and plank this deck.  I'll post some more photos then

By the way the second photograph shows the mock up which will be used to try out the RC system before building the hull.

Good luck with your build of Victory, Davew.  is yours the Jokita kit?

I've just glued and pinned in the main gun deck. It needed triming round the edges by about 2mm each side and a corresponding amount on the bulkhead cut-outs.  I can't say I'm looking forwad to making up, painting and rigging the 30 18pound guns that go onto this deck.  I expect I will only rig the ones in the centre that can be seen down through the main deck.

Photos show gun deck in place and the inner gun port ply fitted.

A real job to bend the deck ply to get it below the bulkhead protusions, The gun port ply needed about 2mm taking off the lower edge to get the inner & outers to line up.

Next job is to plank the gun deck

Main gun deck planked.
centre eight gunports on this deck are "open"  i.e. no gunport lids.  These have been lined.
The second planking and the inner bulwark planking can now be done as this planking goes over the gunport linings.
The lower plank of the inner bulwark is in place, thus was painted ochre before glueing in place as it could be difficult to get a clean paint line otherwise between it and the deck planking.

Next stage is to complete the above planking and reshape the gunports. Then paint the inner bulwarks .
After that it is the wales.

meantime there is caravanning and golf, what a busy life it is being retired !!!!

Must be nice to have the patience to build something like this Ken.
Makes my efforts look a bit sad.
I take it you wont be chucking this in the water when its finished that'll keep Bob happy.

Inner bulkheads painted, they go up to the level of the quarterdeck.
Secondry planking completed up to the level of the quarterdeck gunports.
All three wales in place, the lower wale is deeper and slightly thicker than the upper two wales.
I found I couldn't bend the lower wale planking around the bow and get it to bend to the downward contour of the hull, it
just would'd lie flat on the hull.  My solution was to use three shorter pieces of planking for each wale plank around the bow, the joints can be hidden with filler and will then be painted, should then be invisible.

Next stage is to line all the gunports. A long job and not that easy.
The lining planks are 6mm wide and have to be inset from the hull sides by 1mm ( the thickness of the gunport lids )
This only leaves about 1mm glueing surface !!!!

Gunports lined and painted red.
Sides painted with the black and ochre bands, this is done at this point as shortly in the construction sequence, the cannons will have to be fitted to the middle gun deck before the quarterdeck is put in place. With the cannons installed it is more difficult to paint these bands.
The ochre bands widen in the middle, which narrows the black bands.
The paints used are water based from Jokita which are the true colour of Victory.

Next job is to stick on the copper plating. 2500 plates are supplied in the kit.!!!!!!

The photo seems to show the bands as having wavey edges - not true - they really are straight - it's the photo - Honest!!!!

It looks a great job your doing there and a true labour of love ;)

Can I ask what did the kit cost and where you got it from?

The kit is the Jokita one and I purchased it from Westbourne Models - £640
Bought it in Jan and I expect it to take 2 1/2 years to build at my rate of building
