Rubber Compound?
« on: September 25, 2010, 09:59:40 pm »

Hi folks,

As you are aware, there are numerous fenders available on the market and these are generally vac form plastic which really dont work in my opinion.

I want to create fenders just like the real size versions with some form of rubber. I plan to make them in 2 halves using a mould and 'weld' them together with some form of adhesive etc ..

Now making the mould is fairly simple but what can i use as the rubber? I would achieve uniform thickness by either filling the mould and allowing the outer few mm to set before emptying the mould or i would make another slightly smaller mould which would be placed into the larger mould on top of the rubber.

I think, with the right material, smaller working fenders could be made and would acutally protect your models when tied up..

Any help appreciated.

What about silicone sealants
you can get it in differant colours and types  from proper building suppliers (ie not B&Q/wickes)

Various grades of RTV (room temperature vulcanising) rubbers in colour are available from a few suppliers , www.tiranti.com  will also supply mould making supplies being one.  Hard or soft rubbers .

Try a PM to Umi Ryuzuki.  She makes model boat fenders which are quite resilient.

 Hi Dan

I've tried making fendering for my 10th scale Trent lifeboat with a product called Sikaflex -EBT colour was spot on but it took about 2 weeks to set and it was a pig to get
out off the mould without it getting damaged ,not a success.
what boat is the fendering for ? and what scale ?

i had some silicon fenders from cap maquette models,

they look the part in pink or white.....

not i HAD..... some

the rubber deteriorates and the silicon drops off and as its solid - its sinks..

i had a go at making my own too, - i made a mould in RTV and then cast into with a product which was part resin, part plasticiser, this gave a hardish flexible but solid fender...

i got the stuff from amber composites....

i remember it ended up being an expensive way to go, so if you develop a new way of making them let me know !!! i'll buy some, i used solid resin ones on my coble..

Hi Guy,

Thanks for the info. I've not looked into it anymore as ive been busy with other things.

I must see your coble, i remember sending you some photos of mine.

I'm currently in the process of making a new scratch built one measured off my mates boat. I've made a jig but just on with fettling it and what not.

You can get different color silicone sealant even black from screwfix. I have used it to make fenders for my IOM yacht.
Have you thought about using ( Polymorph ) they are poly granule/beads, you mix with hot water , pour or spoon into your mold,
or form them by hand. You can buy it from Maplins the electronic people.

I post my products here.

http://mysite.ncnetwork.net/res1tf1s/id12.html

The reason I created these was because I needed 120 inches of fendering, and the
bicycle tire I was folding wasn't gluing or holding together well. So I made a mold of
two six inch strips, and cast these in polyurethane. They can be glued directly to the
boat using rubberized CA glue.
