Gold Rover is due out from CL to Bidston dock...should have gone Sunday, but couldnt get the dock open...... :-))

Gold Rover was due out dead ship, on Friday but the gate got stuck, same on Sunday but they did manage to get her out into the river but it was too late to get her into Alfred so parked her in no5 graving dock. She was supposed to be moved today and indeed was but the stern tug noticed that her propeller was turning when she was on her way down and it was realised that the turning gear had not been locked or unlocked whichever it is.

So she had to be returned back into the graving dock however, once she had left the gate was closed and when they tried to reopen it again, it became stuck also. Panic was now ensuing I think and there was talk about anchoring her somewhere however, the gate was freed and back she went another try the 4th will made tomorrow I expect. All very embarrassing and the cost does not bare thinking about.

One thing that series of (very good) photos proves to me is just how plug ugly modern ships are. I appreciate and agree that "form follows function" (and cost, I suppose), but most modern ships don't appear to have a curved line anywhere. OK, some cruise ships do, but I'm really referring to your day to day cargo, bulkers etc. I really can't see the point of being a "ship spotter" when there're only multidudes of clones scooting around. A bit like train spotting (the wheeled variety), now they also appear to be homogenised groups.
And buildings and all sorts of other stuff. Thank goodness my formative days were spent during the days of diversity. BY.

We are in favour at the moment as the two (in my opinion) best looking RFAs are currently here...Gold Rover and Fort Rosalea (Grange in real money).

Bryan,
You are quite right in your comments re: modern ships being ugly. The majority of models made today are of ships of the past, with very few offerings of modern vessels.

Tony.

Hello Sailor(boy).
I deliberately left out "Gold Rover" and other RFAs as I didn't want to be accused of bias! However, The Rovers were designed during the early to mid 1970s..and the 2 earlier "Forts" not much later. So here we are looking at designs nearly 40 years old. Forts "Grange" and "Austin" were really just improved "Nesses". Indeed, the internal layout was almost identical. And that goes back to the early 1960s. The only thing that spoils the lines of Grange and Austin is that ruddy great hangar complex. Again, function over form.
If the designers hadn't used the Ness class as a template then the hangar could have been blended in to the rest of the superstructure to give a much more pleasing profile.
Although (to my mind) the new Forts (George and Victoria) are externally almost "pretty" considering their "function", internally they are dreadful. During my brief period on "George" I could find neither rhyme or reason why the internal layout should be so complex. Nowhere do the alleyways go to where a logical mind would expect them to go. I won't even mention the "buoyancy" tanks that dominate the back end of the ships, the gun sponsons that limit "overside" views from the bridge or the fact that the steering wheel is not even on the centre-line!. No, the outside is OK, but more like an overcomplicated factory inside. BY.
