project 205 osa class
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:23:52 pm »

Hi,
For few month now I've been building osa in 1:24 and this is as far as I got.
Interesting part is I never liked those boats ,there are a lot much better looking, but these still are mean looking boats.
Plans are fairly decent from Poland available in Modelarstwo okretowe magazine.
Editor was very nice and he even send me cross sections via email when I had few difficulties with my copy.
Anyway in time I had collected fair amount of photos on the web so if somebody needs help let me know.

  Hello sjoormen

Could you tell me what the difference between this OSA and OSA II is?

 Thanks

OSA II had different missile launcher containers, ribbed and, I assume, lighter units. The SS-N-2 missile may have been a slightly improved model also. I like Osas :-))

Hi,
yes most distinct difference were newer missiles with longer ranges, their wings were folded, so different launchers were made. Proekt 205 U had motors  much stronger, so they were much faster. But with this boats is like this -there is lots of differences betwen boats even from same batches with speed for as much as 5 or 6 knots. But this insanity was even worse with shershen torpedo boat class -fastest in Yugoslavia was capable 53 knots slowest was capable less than 32 if I remember correctly. Lots of differences between engines, propellers, shafts and so on. Russian technic , nothing you can do :embarrassed:.

I can admit to being a fan of these vessels even though they may be hideous.  :-) I came across one of those Chinese kits made by Kitech/Zhengdefu in about 1/127 scale or 33cm "box scale" and set about trying to accurize it. I also found many many photo references on Russian sites. Very interesting attack craft with the famed Styx missiles and the automatic AK-230 guns.

I have never been able to find a good clear photo of the stern area out of the water. It has three propellers, possibly three rudders?

Great work here and thanks for sharing. Made me remember all the fast attack craft I like.  :-))

Fantastic, thank you. Amazing how massive the propellers are and how small the rudders are; it looks like they are barely in the path of the propeller thrust. Also did not know that the transom was so tapered, like a Martini glass.

I really don't think they are hideous.  :embarrassed: They are handsome, purposeful craft and they do look mean.

Are you going to construct movable parts like turrets and rotating radar?

Yes that propellers are impressive.I was quite surprised at rudders myself.
Apparently they are quite effective, at full speed they are locked and can't be moved more than few degrees(three if I remember correctly).
I would like  how much could rudders be moved at western designs. Probably datas are classified.
About radars and turrets- well at this point I am afraid that my osa will be top heavy.
Missile containers are quite heavy also radar mast, so I will see.

At this point I think you have to make the two main radars capable of automatic rotation, the mast mounted "Square Tie" and the aft "Drum Tilt". The scale and size is too great. Perhaps the top heaviness can be minimized by having a modified servo drive both of these radar but be kept low in the hull with a long shaft rising up to attach to the radars? Same for the gun turrets but it would be neat if you could aim them or stop/start rotation...

They can also be mini or micro servos to keep weight down. How big is this boat? 1:24 is quite big.

This one is only 12-13 inches long: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g0DzRCxQTxU

Like you i also own a scratchbuild OSA, it's the type II, with the different launchtubes, at first i made the type I, but changed it to the type II after some years.

The maiden a few years ago, still not finished, but she can drive.

Hi Sjoormen, how is your progress?

I wasn't looking for R/C Project 205 boats but I ran across one on a Chinese site that I understand is 1.65 meters long and fully functional. I am impressed by the workmanship and the execution but I know yours is being built to a much higher standard of precision.  :-)) There is a nice 26 minute video on this link showing what the boat can do.  :o Maybe it will inspire you...

http://bbs.5imx.com/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=687001&extra=page%3D1

I think I am liking these boats more and more. I think they are more interesting than a more common PT or torpedo boat. Keep up the good work.

Hi, guys.
I ve been away for sometime due some unfinished work around house, so I haven't done much.
I did try to build Square Tie and I had some troubles so there is nothing to show :embarrassed: .
Yes those things should be functional, but well nothing is glued yet.
I looked chinese site that you posted, nice boat isnt it.
Mine is bit smaller with its 1,6m and some change.
Probably same scale but his boat is osaII, at least his missile launchers look that way.
So that may be reason on length differrence.(or my sloppy scaling {-) ).
About detailing: plans I got are made in scale 1:72.
They are quite accurate conserning scale, but when scaling up by 3,... well lots things could be aded- if you know what they are and where they should be.
Of course there are quite some differences between my Yugoslave boat as it was in sixties and polish boat few years back.
I even got antifouling colour wrong %% .
I intented to build this boat as much as in plans later I can and add details as I found them on web.
Still-I never saw them personaly -When they were sent here (long before my time ) they were top secret of course, nobody could see them. Then there was war and they were kept in Montenegro exept one or two in Croatia.
Few years back they were rebuild and sent to Egipt.
Uh I must no forgot again, plans are avaliable at:
saga@modelarstwookretowe.pl
and are in 1:72. I recieved few PM with question about me scaling plans up and sending via mail- well I did talk with copy service, but It would too expensive, there is of course thing about plans that somebody else did and I am not comfortable selling them.

Keep on sending the good work, you will see the completion...  :-))

You have superb photographs at your disposal... it is amazing that the propellers do not look like "speed boat propellers" but seem like those meant for larger warships like a destroyer.
