RMAS Brenda ready for service
« on: October 05, 2010, 08:30:29 pm »

Some of you might remember that my tug Brenda had a slight mishap at Wicksteed.
She was happily tucked up in her transport bow which I put on 1 of the tables.
Along came the wind and slowly moved the box closer to the edge of the table, closer, closer.
Then no more table.
I was told that the box slowly inverted before a brief freefall to the ground.
I know I like to build my models reasonably strong, but not to withstand being dropped inverted from about 3 feet with the 6 volt 12 Ah battery inside.
Needless to say she was a "bit of a mess".
I have been slowly repairing her back to her original condition and am close to completion.
As it has taken me some time I have not posted any pics, but by the end of the week she should be complete so will post pics of her then.

As she was washed in starting to prepare the deck here are a few pics as she is now.
Still got a bit of work to do but shouldn't take too long.
The internals are over 20 yrs old and only updated to 2.4 Ghz Giantcod radio.

Lovely looking boat, loads of character and somehow always very satisfying to overhaul and restore an old model ready for a few more years of service.

Is that a decaperm in the bottom?  I didn't think you were too keen on those motors or is that an ungeared variety?

Guilty as charged, yes a deccaperm.
But in my defence this is the ONLY model boat that was bought by my wife and she got the recommended motor (Deccaperm) for it.
I have re-engined her but was asked about "her" motor so quickly put it back.

Soon have the Chatham squad running again soon Bob between us. Next we will have to build some mud dredgers and lighters to complement her.

She was built from the Sirmar RMAS Alice semi-kit over 20 yrs ago which included the hull, plan, fittings and grp superstructure.
A pity this was so underrated as it builds into a very seaworthy 33 inch tug.
From my experience of the real ship I fitted a bow thruster to help with steering astern which was not fitted on the real vessel.

Hi Bob,
Thats cheating fitting a bow thruster, but yes the real ones were not that brilliant going straight when making sternway. But I think that old lighter I have is the right scale to pair up with her, when you do sea trials, how about lashing the lighter alongside, make a good photo.

Hi Bob,
Nearly finished her but here is couple a pics of the Barbara, for those uninitiated in RMAS craft, when there are a number of vessels of the same class being built each wave of dilievery has improvements made. The last pair of Girls delievered was the Barbara and Betty, before the improved girl class where built.
