Bugs in China
« on: October 06, 2010, 12:21:54 pm »

Apart from the ants nest that developed in my 1Tb external drive last week, the other bug that keeps landing in the washing on the line are these fellas.

I think they are called cicada bugs. They sit in the tops of trees and make a very loud chirp that can be ear splitting if there are enough of them. One time I thought someone was cutting wood with a blunt disc.

The iPod gives some idea of scale.

We get them here in Canada too. I believe they live in the ground for up to seven years in a pupate state, then change to what you see in Tiger's pictures. They climb trees in this state so they can reproduce. Years ago I went by a lit grocery store at night, thousands of these were attracted to the light and were bouncing off the store glass like hail.
I imagine they'd be good protein on the wing though.

You can buy them in little bamboo cages as pets.

I have only seen deep fried crickets here, though they do eat stir-fried barbecued cicada up north.

Cicada also eat a lot of wasp larvae, and so good for protein indeed.

I  thought cicada's weren't carnivorous they're veggies! the wasp larvae was inside the Cicada because that's where they were laid by the the Cicada wasp - My mother had some in cages on the balcony when I was a lad......noisy beggars!

If you read on John, you,ll see that they actually live underground for anything between 13/17 years, they are sometimes refereed to as the 17 year locust, although they are not of the locust family
