Boats around Phuket, Thailand
« on: October 06, 2010, 01:02:46 pm »

Recently had a trip to Phuket for 6 weeks.
Some nice boats around the island I would like to share pics.

I love the lines of these traditional boats.

Sort of broader towards the bow.

And lastly a few nice shots of one of those boats with a long drive shaft, running past some dredging operations.
Great rooster tail.

Anyone know the name of this type of boat?

Thanks for the memories, TT.

I lived in Phuket for ten years, and I guess I just got used to seeing the boats.  A chum wanted to buy a 'longtail' (Yes, that is their proper name) about five years ago - we could get a new one built for 50,000 Baht (about 1,000 pounds at today's exchange rate.)

One can buy the propellers for these longtails in almost any hardware shop, for the princely sum of 250 - 300 Baht (five or six pounds)

The one thing you just cannot get is a silencer for the engine!  Thais believe the noise keeps evil spirits away, so the louder the better.

Alas, I now live in the North East of Thailand, about one thousand kilometres from Phuket and also a long way from the nearest sea.

Thanks Geoff.

I never saw the point in the long tail until I went to Ranong, and saw the tail swung around, pointing forward, to reverse the boats out of tightly aligned rows of boats at the quay.
I guess it saves the need for a gearbox, not needing reverse.

Geoff
Hopefully I will be moving to Kunming in Yunnan province soon. This means that road trips to Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai (spelling) are on the cards.

You've got the whole range there Mark from the most basic of the long tailed taxis to the fancy gin palaces.  Interesting stuff.

BB, I'm not sure you would have called them 'gin palaces' if you had seen the plywood speedboats after the tsunami.  The longtails were thrown onto the beaches and even the road at Rawai Beach (where TigerTiger took many of his photos) but the plywood jobbies were simply smashed to splinters just up the road at Chalong Bay.  Not a pretty sight.
