Fuses..... where to put them?
« on: October 12, 2010, 03:27:28 pm »

I would like to confirm where to add the fuse in the system to protect an ESC.

I am thinking it should be on the +ve line between the battery and the ESC, before what it is required to protect, but I seem to recall having seen a diagram with it on the +ve between ESC and the motor.

What do the electrics wizards out there say please??

You are right, in the +ve connection between the battery and esc, rated at or  just below the esc max capacity. :-))

The main fuse should certainly be in the positive connection to the battery but it is also useful to put a fuse beteen the motor and the ESC which will prevent unduly large current surges should the prop be caught up in weed or fishing line etc. If you use the search facility from the forum home page to look up 'fuse' you will probably find quite a lot of posts as the subject has been discussed a number of times. A blown fuse is always cheaper than a fried ESC or burnt out motor!

Most modern ESC's are thermally protected against overload on the motor side, therefore they will shut down if presented with a load above their rating.

A fuse on the battery side is sufficient in most instances.

I was thinking of protecting the motor rather than the ESC in this position. The ESC may be able to handle a stalled motor current but the motor might not!

Following on from Collins post

.....in which case the battery side fuse will blow.

Size the fuse to the maximum current the motor is expected to draw under maximum load plus say 10% . The ESC is only a current switch, so if the motor is stalled the ESC will pass through the stall current( and therefore blow the battery side fuse).

Cheers

I'm more inclined to agree with Colin - fuse in the motor line. That's the item that would more than likely demand the current and potentially kill the ESC by doing so. In the case of two motors and one ESC - you still have a motor to get 'home' on.

If you're really worried - stick a fuse in every line - just get the ratings right.
