Fishing nets

I found a suitable material for 1:24 - 1:32 scale fishing boat nets.

It's called tulle, is available ready-coloured in most colours needed such as green, blue, orange etc and (I think!) is made from nylon.

I ordered a small piece (100cm x 137cm) from a seller on ebay that I can highly recommend. It cost 99p +55p postage and was delivered within 2 days of ordering.

Here's a link to the sellers ebay shop for future reference:

Ok its a hexagon mesh not a diamond but regardless of that it'll look good and more importantly it cheap !!! This would be great for making a model of a pelagic trawl out of.

I have about 15-18 plans for real trawl nets from the late 1960's thru till 1987 and for trawlers from a 117ft side trawler to an 87ft sidetrawler including a plan for a Jackson Pair trawl from 1982. I should be able to get access to net designs for more recent variants and i'll do my best to put up scale plans as and when my health allows.

Heh...I did give the lady the heads up that she may get some strange orders when I asked for permission to use her photos of the material for the post here :)

Aye - it's a hexagon mesh Davie, but at the scale - especially when in a net bin or wound round a net drum - you won't really notice it. It's a good compromise, as it's cheap and ready coloured. I've never seen any diamond mesh at this kind of scale...unless, of course, someone else knows differently ;)

I did see a square mesh type cloth somewhere recently , will have to try and find it again. A square mesh is fine for using on a model trawl as you just make the cuts to turn it 45' to put it on the diamond. Besides all white fish and prawn trawlers have to have square mesh panels in the top of the nets now to let small fish out. Again i'll get in touch with my contacts and i'll do a set of scale plans as soon as I can.

I needed some catch netting for spent shell cases on my MTB and used one of those net bags for the washing machine, Better-Wear type things it was and it was square-ish mesh: not quite square but not hex either.

Another source is the top of fruit cartons.  Morrisons sell the fruit with a netting top cover.
Unfortunaetly its in one colour - orange.

I have used for my sons drifter an old curtain, which you can buy for pennies out of the rest-box. Treat it with coffee or tee, to give him the real colour. Looks good and very realistic with the fine meshes...

Pantyhose.  Various size of mesh and color.  Embarrasement if you buy them.  Pain if you 'borrow' them from your 'significant-other'...

Declan,
Unfortunately, no 'model' shops of any variety around here.  ...  Or if there is, I wish someone would tell me where!

Well the one decent model shop up in my neck of the woods has ( or will be by the end of the month) closed down. I'm now stuck with ordering online or popping into a shop when i'm down in Fife or further south.

Davie( still up to my neck in 28mm scale armies !!! )

... just a small note to the pantyhose-tip....., please make sure that the pantyhose is not filled with somebody. It might lead to serious damages....... ;D

I have utilised ladies "hair nets" for this. Obviously they come in a variety of shades for the vain little creatures...but the look great when rolled up (the nets, I mean...but perhaps..)

I am trying to get hairnet, I am assuning it will glue better. Nylon is very inert and will not react to most glues, even CA.

I want to glue to the inside of a lobster pot and there is a need for a fast grab on this fidly work.
I have tried CA but to no avail.

Anybody else any ideas?

How about the bags that oranges/onions are packed in?? Dip in paint to get the colour you need and pin out until dry then cut the size you need!  ;)

Working in the food industry I have to wear a hairnet at work, that has diamond shaped holes, At a rough guess about 5mm. If any one wants a sample PM me.

You really need 1" for a 'crawl' net at your scale.

String shopping bag has holes of about 1/2" - 1"

You could try to get some fishing net from a chandlers.
I think they use a smaller size hole for nets on fish farms as well.
You could try googling fish farm suppliers, or net manufacturers.
Or get a basket ball net from a toy basket ball set (back of door type) from toys r' us

Or you could make your own. I have seen articles on making net and it wasn't rocket science. I am sure there will be something on the Web

I have just been down the sports store.

A full size basketball net has 1" square netting.
It would also hang well, drooping sufficiently.
This would siut jour scale for scramble nets, with equiv to 1ft squares.

It is synthetic, but I have used shoe polish to colour Dacron in the past and it works very well. Perhaps black with brown on top will give you a good colour.
I just put shoe cream into the corner of a cloth, fold over the line and drag it through, repeating to get a strong colour.

Hi all, fish net stockings and tights are not called that for nothing you know, I can recommend exploring this area of ladies garments!  It may cost you a diamond to get your hands on them though!

hi there.  new to the forum so here goes my first in put.   Wot about a table tennis net or the

obvious the fishing net the kids use at the pond for catching the minows. Lately I have seen

netting covering the scaffolding where a building was getting a new roof.

I must remember to take the scissors next time I am pasing that building and get a sample of the

netting.

Hello,
The best material for Scale Fishing Nets is SILK TULLE, not Nylon.
Nylon Tulle is a very "springy" material, Silk Tulle is very soft and pliable, lends its self to being draped easily,
My Wife uses it to make 1/12 scale Wedding Dresses and Veils.
Silk Tulle is available in many colours.

Have a look at   http://www.hazel-dowds-littlepeople.co.uk/
Scroll down to "Fabrics and Tools".
You can see how soft the Silk is from the photos, but is quite strong also.
Sold in A4 size, or multiples, at £3:50.
