Glue for Lite Ply
« on: October 19, 2010, 02:28:34 pm »

I will be using lite ply for the first time on my next build.

Could someone please recommend a good adhesive. A trade name would be best for a thicky like me.

Many Thanks Colin H.

...Hi Colin H...

By pure coincidence I have jusy been to my local model shop for some Ply, Balsa & Wood Glue to build a couple of wheelhouses for my current builds...

I would recommend the stuff that I have just bought...

WESTBURY  Express PVA Wood Glue...System 2000...
    190ml bottle for 3 pounds 35 pence...

It does exactly as it says on the bottle....

...Best Regards...Norry...

Norry, T

Thats great thanks for the speedy reply. I was in the model shop today and spotted some Lite Ply which was slightly distorted. I got a 20% reduction so at the moment I am steaming it and putting it between glass I think that should do the trick.

Once again many Thanks.

Any PVA wood glue is fine for lite ply.  I use an Evo Stick version now but it's all the same stuff.  Don't buy the piddling little bottles in model shops though, buy a reasonable sise one from B&Q or any other hardware supplier for a fraction of the cost.

Hi B.B.

Thanks for the reply. Now I know PVA will do the job I have just rung a joiner friend who's going to drop me off a large bottle decanted from his 1 gallon bottle. Best of all its FREEEEEEEE.

Colin, because the stuff dries rather than cures every time you open a bottle you let air at it and over time it starts to thicken.  I would decant a smaller amount from your large bottle and use it out of a small container and leave the big bottle alone until you need to fill the small one.

It's also worth remembering that you can thin PVA with water, which opens up a whole range of possibilities.  I've actually put very delicate stuff together in the past and held it in place while I apply a spot of watered down PVA with a brush.  I've used it as caulking mixed with black powder paint and I've laid deck plates down made of heavy paper with watered down PVA painted on.

I think it is one of the most versatile glues available.
