We bought all top of the line Kitchen Aid appliances 5 years ago, so far they have all broken down in one way or another.
The water pump in the washer was the latest to let go one month after the extended warranty ran out. You think you are buying a quality brand but no I guess they are all made to be disposable these days.  >>:-(

When we moved house in 1980 we needed a new washing machine, to replace our old twin tub, still in good working order so I followed Which magazine advice for best buy a Bosch, quite expensive, it lasted just over 2 years, the cast brackets on the drum which held The concrete weights completely rusted away, the weights dropped on the pump, hoses and motor, throw away job. This was evidently a common fault with this machine So much for best buy.

Came to conclusion might as well buy cheapest, as nothing is built To last whatever the price.

We bought a microwave from Tesco when we got married 4 years ago, payed £30 for it expecting it to last a couple of years- still going strong now and shows no sign of faults. It has a power dial, old fashioned 'egg timer' type timer dial and a button to open the door- simple.

So while I'm waiting for the pump for the washing machine to arrive now the ice maker in the fridge is broken, even though the repairman will already be here for the washer I have to pay $79 for another service call.
While under warranty a piece in the fridge door broke, a little part the size of a plastic toothpick that was the hinge for the ice flap thingy.
They replaced the whole door they said was valued at $1500

We have an Australian made Simpson washing machine bought in 1985 still working perfectly. I suppose this means that, should something go wrong, it won't be covered by warranty?  %)

Perhaps not quite 'household appliances', though they are to me!  :-)
I have a 1969 Hammond organ - still going strong. I bought some recording gear - mikes, mixer etc - in 1973 and it all still works. And some of my hi-fi separates were bought in 1978.
