Had a request to do some translating. It concerned a style of Power Boat racing, basically a Sprint , 100 metres against the clock, Various classes, decided by which Motor battery equippement. The name of the new(?) class is S.A.W. Stands for"Straight A Way". Bad English, sounds a bit American, they talk about Straight aways in Motor racing. Any of you heard of it? They had a demo at the Duisburg Lake, winning boat was timed at over 130 kms an hour. They have GPS on board for measureing speed etc.

You are quite correct in your translation, Straight A Way racing. One man, one boat against the clock for hopefully a record. To get a record they have to run both directions of the course and an average is taken. It is big in the USA as you say with regular timed events. One of your countrymen (I believe) holds the out and out speed record with a specially built electric hydro with 140mph under the NAMBA rules

You can find the US records for the IMPBA here http://www.impba.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63&Itemid=69 and Namba here http://namba.com/

The USA do not use GPS which can be inaccurate, they use proper timing equipment on a surveyed course. Do a search for Legg Lake Records on You Tube.

Couple of links to the 140mph run http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MR-6dwFVlLs&NR=1 and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_VgqT0-PocQ

In the Uk both the Fast Electric and the IC boats hold speed record weekends. These are normally held at Branston water in Staffordshire. I believe the IC  event had to be cancelled this year due to weed. The Electric should have been last weekend. The IC event normally attracts competitors from Europe.
