Whitby Coble Plans
« on: November 09, 2010, 04:08:54 pm »

Hi,

ive been searching all over the net for whitby coble plans as i wish to make a model of one.

I've found nothing except plans for a 27ft northumbrian coble, which are no good as the boat i'm making a model of is a 33 footer. The shape of the bow is also different to the plans as its a sailing coble where as my model subject was built in 1966 with an engine and cab.

Anyone who can help with anything to do with plans or scratch building one would be greatly appreciated.

have you tried the local whitby libuary service , they may have some info on local vessels , also the local press often holds archive photographs ! i know it could be a long shot .

Hey Slug,

Yes ive recently realised this  <:(    Its a hell of a craft, brilliant really when you think of it.

Ive had some joy with the coble society in the way of learning a member has produced some plans and these will be available in the near future.

Otherwise i'm measuring every possible thing on the real boat to try and get the profile.

Dan if you join Trawlerphotos and give amblecoble or valhalla a message they should be able to help , David's ( valhalla ) Father is rebuilding a Coble just now, she is the True Vine ( ex-BH 100 ) and is 9.14m/30ft long ( registered length )

You wont find any...

Im (slowly) developing plans for a basic whitby.

Will get back to you when I get them sorted. Developed also a strongback on which the boat will be built.

Good couple of threads here and here. Second one is a model built from a bit of old apple tree.

Hi, Years ago I wanted to build a coble and I asked Hector Handyside of Amble if he had the plans for one. He said NO, there are NO plans for a coble. You just start with four planks of wood and build it. I am sure there is a little bit more than that to it but that is the gist of the problem. Hector was in my opinion one of the best coble builders in the business, to see him working was a dream and lettering without a maul stick, well, superb. Nemesis.

yep and they were pretty much all unique also, the craft being tailored to the fishermans requirements.

I believe basic measurement info was used such as a sort of table of offsets, or remembered atleast.

Simple boat, A nightmare to build

All the boat plans for ships built in whitby were shipped from the town museum and kept at NMM only A4 copies were sent back to the museum now no cobble plans in them
NMM have plans for a northumberland one and some drawings also one that looks like my great uncles cobble sea harvest built in the town if I can remember where I put them I`ll take a photo
@ Dan did tell you I had plans

Orion Mouldings used to offer a fibreglass coble hull. Check the site if you are interested.

That hull is basically an enterprise coble (plans from my hobby store) blown up to about 1/10th scale.

Its not even square and looks nothing like a coble and certainly not worth the money. I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

My opinion, do as you wish.

I can send you some enterprise plans if you want, pm me.

Because cobles were built without plans, the only way you fellers are gonna build one is to get to somewhere like Filey when they are ashore an get clickin with your camera, before they are all broken up.
I think its true to say that we wont see any new builds in the future, so dont hang about.
Im particularly interested to see if anyone has built the modern version of the coble showing how the old design was adapted to the motor, via the development of the Propellor tunnel.

If your ever down at Goole (not sure why , maybe to call in to the club pond  :-)) )
try the waterways museum they have a restored cobble where you can take measurements from and photos.
They may even have some plans from the rebuild.

I was scanning the net for ideas on boat models. I HAVE some plans for a 30ft Whitby coble, 1:15 scale. I traced them from a mate's plan who worked for a while as an apprentice in the yard in Whitby. That was in the 1960's and I have still got it.

My printer scanner will not take them between A2 and A1 size. I will see if it is possible to get them copied locally
