Is this a virus or what?
« on: November 18, 2010, 04:13:39 pm »

Hi all, I have had a letterbox size screen come up on my PC monitor that says "Bad Image" every time my PC carries out an action, including playing a game like solitaire.  To load thunderbird you would need to press accept key dozens of times, then the email would come through OK.

The problem is gone now but it took 7 hours the first time with Digital Home Support using remote access to clear it.
It seemed to be after I downloaded Virgin security s/w.  The technician at DHS said it was a clash between Virgin and Google!

That was 5 weeks ago.  I had the same problem arise 2 days ago and again DHS cleared it but it took 5 hours to do so.
Has anyone had a 'Bad Image' screen come up?

I have nothing but praise for the home support technicians, who battled on to fix it.
The opinion of the last one was that it was Malware causing it.
I asked if was removed by a bulldozer or picked up with tweezers to examine, unfortunately it was the bulldozer method.  He did leave behind the s/w that cleared it but I will have to remove my security s/w, AVG before it will work.

I don't go anywhere dodgy, (apart from Mayhem!), and never open emails from unknown sources.

So, has anyone else had this problem or opinions?

Is it a malware activity?

regards to all, Roy

What did DHS say what the Malware problem was?

From what I can see it is malware , i would advise on using Norton or Karpersky rather than AVG which I have found problems with in the past

Hi, I think it was a guess that malware might be responsible, the technician loaded up 2 malware security programs for me that he liked to use.  I am waiting to see if the problem re-occurs.
When it hit me first the computer was virtually unuseable.

Each time I had the problem I had the technician on the phone for about an hour and we were discussing the problem.  Long ago I was a computer engineer, when you could sit inside them!

Hi Davie Tait, so I am not alone!  I notice that the first post on that web site is 5 years old!  I am surprised I have not heard of it before.
The recommendations look like this is a nasty item.
Thanks for the response, regards Roy

I have had to sort so many problems on friends computers that have disapeared as soon as norton is removed I won't even use the free copy my isp GAVE me. I use AVG free adition or AVAST again a free program, and I have never had a problem with either (maybe with the exception of AVAST wanting to scan everything before it opens it, downloads it, stores it, pastes it, but if you have plenty of time its good  {-) )

AVG or AVAST both free are great, but if i had to pick one it would be AVAST.

We use this one
http://www.f-secure.com/en_UK/products/home-office/internet-security/

Its very good and quite unobtrusive and more importantly free with our ISP

AVG is not that good you should get yourself a decent anit-virus program such as Norton or Macfee yes they cost money but its a small price to pay to stop the hassle of spy wear and malwear as well as any other virus you pick up.

It's not antivirus. It's a very effective rogue remover.
