Dremmel or another make?
« on: November 18, 2010, 06:21:30 PM »

Apologies if in wrong section....
Im looking to get a multi tool (oo er!) Dremmel seem to be dearest. Are the other makes eg Draper etc any good? or do you get what you pay for? B&Q seem to have a couple of types ,or would I be better off going through Amazon or somesuch?
 Any info appreciated...

Yes you do get what you pay for to a large extent but if you only have a light use requirement one of the cheaper tools may suit you. On the other hand if you go up market, it might cost a bit more but you know it will meet all your foreseeable needs.

Very often it comes down to what you can afford....

Personally I like the Rotacraft mini tools. They are not built to the specification of Dremel, but the grip, feel and weight of them is to my liking. I struggle with the bulkier and heavier Dremel mini drills. The Rotacraft are cheaper, a basic rc 12 is a very cost effective starter set.

Just my thoughts,
Tony.

I have to say i have always gone for the Dremmel . Yes you may have to pay a wee bit more but as mentioned before ,you get what you pay for !! But like anything they can have problems . I had a cordless one thats battery didn't keep a charge , sent it back and i had a new one within a week and a wee box of freebies for my inconvenience

I find that the Powercraft combi-tool provides a cheap and cheerful alternative. At 12 - 15 they were remarkably good value and well made. But I can't see any around now...

a few years ago I picked up a cheap 20 at the time combi drill set, it had a flexi shaft, polishing bits, engraving bits, grinding, cutting you name it there it was. It was a fantastic set, lent it to someone who promptly disappeared off the face of the planet taking it with them, would love another set like it  {-)

have a look in ALDI , they usually have powercraft around this time of year, cheap but very good.
I also have a dremel , but they seem to be about equal for light work.

I HAVE WORKED MY WAY THROUGH SEVERAL DREMEL TOOLS, - I WORK THEM HARD !!!

however if budget is a consideration take a look at the  kobe item from cromwell tools - they do a kit, with flexible drive, cable, cutting disks, lots of attachments,  for not alot of money....

cromwell are all over the UK and you odnt need an account, you can find your nearest branch and go to the trade counter and just buy....

the tools are variable speed,  and similar to dremel, ( not quite as good quality but alot less cost than a dremel )

For myself, I'm going to stick with Proxxon. And there's a good selection of their products in "a shop near you". Bryan.

I use the ALDI one, does what it says on the tin, you're not paying 20 for the name, (add that to any branded accessory too), plus you'll get 3 year warranty.

OK, so maybe you don't get the finess of a Dremel or Proxxon, but are you making watches or a model boat??

The Kobe tool looks exactly like the Powercraft one - including all the accessories. Only it's twice the price.....

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Halfords Mini Drill which was all I could afford when I was starting out
and is good value if you can get it in one of their sales. Mine cost about 20 in the sale and is still going strong 4ys later.

Agree re the Halfords mini-drill. I've got it but it's in black with a different name...but definately the same drill (from the outside, anyway). I thought it had a fault on it as when I put it under too heavy a load it would cut out and need to be switched off and on again, but in the paperwork it lists that as a protection feature for the motor.

Heaviest job it's done is true-ing the jaws on the lathe with a small stone.

Had it about 5 years (Xmas pressy from dear old MUM). Used it loads and still works great.

Have a spare Rotocraft, operates off 12volts, runs at 18000rpm max. fine for light weight work, as new hardly used complete with transformer, FREE to good home, just pay the postage.

                    Regards, Tony.
