Lifebuoy Colour
« on: September 24, 2013, 11:01:53 pm »

Hi,
Does anyone have the definitive answer as to what colour lifebuoys were during WWII ?

I'm specifically looking at Italian but would be interested to hear about all nationalities.

Thanks

Hi Kev,
as they were probably made of cork, with a canvas covering,I would have thought a creamy white colour would fit in nicely. The rope around would have been hemp,so a straw colour for that.Just add some rust and dirt stains and no one could argue with that!
cheers Mate

Tugs and trawlers grabbed by the Admiralty were
painted grey. This included everything hanging
around the superstructure.
Some RN  fleet tenders had grey life rings until
it was apparent they couldn't be seen in the sea.
White with red bits were for show and visibility
until the orange Perry buoy version appeared.

Geman life belts and Carley floats were a dark mustard like yellow

I have seen some coloured US pictures and they were grey or yellow and red
