ARUN lifeboat
« on: December 27, 2010, 08:09:57 pm »

Hello all,

Despite my plea on this site for help regarding help with several aspects of the 52" Arun, I have had so few replies I think this project may be destined for the bin. I have had it now for eight weeks and not yet laid a pencil to it. Could it be because there is simply not enough known about this vessel ?. If there is anyone out there who has built one of these please register, you can also send a mail to MODERATED Thanking in anticipation - Gordon :'(

to be fair to everyone gordon, you have only posted twice........the first time seeking help [ which took me some time to find]

Have also recieved a ARUN 52 at the Warwick show. Moulding looks good. Has anybody got a tip for motorization ?, help would be appreciated !, speed controllers, sources etc
Gordon

....................     was posted in the middle of someone else's thread and has been lost in the posts of the day................ and your second post is in the tugs and towing section.........not the best place to put a request for help with a lifeboat.

try putting up a new thread for yourself giving a little of your own experience, and then help will be levelled towards your experience and abilities.

Should really start another thread in 'Working Boats' will get better response then. Plans should be available from RNLI Engineering in Poole, drop them an email or there is probably somebody on here who could lend you some, pop request in 'wants and swaps'.
Macs Mouldings  do window frame set for the Arun and lots of 1/12 scale fittings. (assume it's 1/12 scale?)
http://www.macsmouldings.co.uk/page_1272916829685.html
Speedline models can supply a lot of fittings, not listed on website but just drop Adrian an email or give  him a call.
http://speedlinemodels.com/
Model Slipway do some lifeboat fittings in 1/12 scale including stanchions, just look under fittings.
http://www.modelslipway.com/
Barry's Model Lettering do markings and can make them up for any specific boat, give him,a call or email.
http://www.modellettering.com/index.asp
For information and pictures you could try the following:
Lifeboats 24/7    http://www.lifeboats24-7.co.uk/
Lifeboats Enthusiasts Society    http://www.rnli-lbes.org.uk/
Lifeboat Models    http://www.lifeboatmodels.co.uk/
I can give you a list of all stations that operated an Arun, if you know which one you want to build I'd approach the station and ask them for info, pictures etc. There are plenty of ex-lifeboats used overseas that would make an interesting project, just a thought,  cheers, Dave.  :-))

Some more info. According to my book 'RNLI Motor Lifeboats' by Nicholas Leach there were 46 boats built between 1971 and 1990, 41x52ft and 5x54ft. Lifeboat 54-03 'Edward Bridges' is on display at Chatham Historic Dockyard, Lifeboat 52-30 'Snolda' renumbered TL-01 used for training from 1998 based at RNLI College in Poole would make nice project as she's in the newer livery, something different. Cheers, Dave.  :-))

Hi Brian,

To power your Arun I would recommend running 2 Graupner speed 900 with 60mm 4 blade porps. Thats what I have on my Arun and it gets to scale speed.
depending on how accurate you want to be with your finished model then there are a few thing you need to be aware of, the first 3 Aruns all had a unique wheelhouse
and boats 03 to 07 where 54 feet long. If as I suspect you have the Models by design mouldings then you have a wheelhouse is a copy of the GRP ones used on boats 04 to 10 from boat 11 until the end of the build all the other boats had an aluminium wheelhouse like the one in the picture of TL-01. This leaves you with 3 boats you can build 52-08 52-09 and 52-10. You can see my Arun with so other information about it here http://www.lifeboatmodels.co.uk/arun.htm

Hope this helps

Regards

John

Or as johno says you could always build your Arun as one of the early prototypes 52 - 02 SIR WILLIAM ARNOLD..which had a totally unique superstructure.see below.

if you want any more picks of this, or the plans i have a set that i could copy and post at cost.

Yes jon, it's used as a research and dive boat, based in Buckie i think.
i have a waterline a5 size ga plan and side elevation of a mclachlan that i could scan for you, but if you contact the HUMBER lifeboat station at spurn point, they still use one, or did till recently as their boarding boat to the severn, and might have some decent plans of one that they would almost surely copy for you.
neil.

the only difference  basically between the boarding boat  and the true mclachlan is that they use an outboard to power the boat these days instead of the mclachlan's water jet drive system, the hull is very similar in shape and size.

a scan would be a good start , id like to use the jet drive in a model just to be different !  i saw the humber one on tv a few weeks ago , wasnt sure if it was on not as the deck area looks different to the one that used to be on display in bristol , which i think was one used at weston super mare ( mud to us locals )

I would be very keen to get hold of a copy of the Mclachlan drawings if the offer still stands? I have been wanting to build a model of one of these boats for a long time but have struggled to get drawings to date.

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks
