Which screws ?
« on: March 01, 2007, 12:44:23 pm »

When using screws to secure fittings on a model boat, which sort is best to use, allowing for the damp environment, etc

In particular Im mounting some fittings for a bow sprit on a sailing boat and need to allow for the water and potential wind strengths

Personally I would use brass.

If you can get to the underside you could try brass ba nuts and bolts I tend to use them on brass fittings to stop them pulling out  ,Peter

Hi BW,

If the finished item will be varnished, then what I do when using brass or St steel screws or bolts, is to fit the screw or bolt then remove it and drip some varnish into the hole, then re fit the screw. This will stop wood from staining from damp penetration over the years.

Hi,

If you can get them at the right size, I would recommend silicon bronze screws, as used in full size boats.

Brass, if you are not careful, can shear or the head become damaged from the driver.

Stainless can rust if you dont get the right spec. stainless.
